Feb 2022 fuc world-uke-day groundhog cbg acoustic-one-take
Inspired by a Facebook post one of my friends put up this morning (thanks, Anne!)
From the Newcastle (Wyoming) Newsletter, February 2, 1922:
"Today is Groundhog Day. If he sees his shadow today, we are in for six more weeks of winter and if he doesn't see it, we will probably get six more weeks anyway."
Also, this is the debut of my new cigar box ukulele.
If the groundhog sees his shadow, they say
Another six weeks of winter are on the way
But even if he doesn’t, well it’s safe to say
We’ll get at least six more weeks anyway
Cause we live in Wyoming
Where the jackalopes do their roaming
If the wind ever stopped blowing,
We’d all fall down
From the Red Desert to the PRB
When it comes to meteorology
We don’t ask rodents, no siree
Oh no
Groundhog Day is just another winter day in Wyoming
It might let up a week or two
In the middle of March, but it ain’t through
April blizzards might blow through
But that’s what we’re accustomed to
Cause we live in Wyoming
Where the jackalopes do their roaming
If the wind ever stopped blowing,
We’d all fall down
From the eastern plains to the Teton peaks
When it comes to meteorology
We don’t ask rodents, no siree
Oh no
Groundhog Day is just another winter day in Wyoming
Sure the air might hurt your face
But that’s the kind of thing that we embrace
No hurricanes and there’s plenty of space
And our marmots keep quiet ‘cause they know their place
Cause we live in Wyoming
Where the jackalopes do their roaming
If the wind ever stopped blowing,
We’d all fall down
From the Bighorns down to I-80
When it comes to meteorology
We don’t ask rodents, no siree
Oh no
Groundhog Day is just another winter day in Wyoming
Groundhog Day is just another winter day in Wyoming
Groundhog Day is just another winter day in Wyoming

Delightful! Ukulele works perfectly here, and is hilarious juxtaposed with a song about Wyoming.

The uke sounds great! "When it comes to meteorology / We don’t ask rodents, no siree" makes me smile - nice write!

Nice write. I still remember helping dig a Wyoming Scout campground out of the snow in mid-July.

Delightful! The lyrics are funny and clever, and you and your cigar-box ukulele sound great. That chorus begs to be a sing-along!

Lovely sound to that new ukulele, and this song is full of folksy charm! You most likely have it worse in Wyoming, but as a New England resident, I can somewhat relate too! And I agree with @porrectus - that wind line in the chorus is terrific.

You paint such a visual picture of world of this song--love it. Fun chorus and some good chuckles here. Happy debut to your cigar box uke!

The line about falling down if the wind stopped blowing made me laugh out loud. We don't have jackalopes here in Wisconsin, but we do have air that hurts your face. Nice write!

Ain't that the truth. I'm pretty sure Winter isn't officially done until about mid-may. And even then we still might get a weird heavy snow here in Laradise.
Also laughed my butt off at the Marmot line!

Nice sounding uke, I like that the lyrics paint a lovely picture of Wyoming winter. By lovely I mean terrifying. I like the line about wind stopping we'd all fall down. I understand that, I live in Maine. Nice work!
