Well, here we are at the end of day 2 & I already feel like I'm way behind. I've been working on this little ditty for the past two days & I still feel like it's incomplete. But I need to move past it & get going on new ideas - or suffer the inevitable fate of creative stagnation. Much to the chagrin of my Muse.
At any rate, this one is built entirely in Jeskola Buzz using all native Buzz Machines, except for HG Fortune's Swamp VSTi (which I've never used before). The Swamp added the muddled & erie backing track that everything else is built on top of. The meter is odd, written in 9/8 & switching from 90 BPM to 130 BPM & then back to 90 BPM. So yeah, bear with it if you can ;->
Alright, I got that out of my system. Onto the next…
See You In The Shadows…

I'm a sucker for weird time signatures, this one almost feels normal somehow, like it's kind of stumbling down the hall but that's just how it moves, you know? Almost sounds like jazz, nice panning, almost sounds like a hymn at times somehow. Even better on second listen :)

Such a cool intro, and I love the imagery this whole song evokes. I can see the silver moonlight over the water but I can also imagine speeding through the desert and sweeping shots of abandoned cities, I guess I imagine this is scoring a Blade Runner-type movie. I would never guessed it was in 9/8, nor would I know how to write a song in 9/8, already way over my head :-) But it's smooth and has an ease to it, flows well.
@apertome Feb 2022
I hope you don't still feel behind. You aren't!
Really liking the odd time signature and time changes. The drums have a nice crunchy quality to them and the changes are just surprising enough to keep me on my toes.
@gardeningangel1 Feb 2022
My pattern-seeking brain is enjoying the challenge of that odd tempo. The bass notes are the land shrouded in night and the melody over top is the full moon broadcasting its mysterious frequencies as it rises above the trees.

very nice to hear your soundscapes again Darby. (incidentally i miss you a ton, i am so sorry i haven't been in touch since before COVID.... we really need to catch up.) this piece is suitably cinematic and the switch up in the tempo and chord progression can only make the listener close their eyes and picture what events you might be scoring.
@heliosonorous Feb 2022
Nice one, dark and night filled, the imagery it conjures is relaxed and solitary.
@emmasully19 Feb 2022
I totally feel you with feeling behind! It’s hard to move forward in some moments of creativity. Working on it!
@dzdandcunfsd Feb 2022
This is great! That tempo change is somehow really smooth and just perfect for this, but to echo @spazsquatch yes, where's the last 12-13 minutes? :'D That delay is perfect! Just right on the edge of meltdown and it stays there and has burrowed its way into my head! Really awesome track! That's a really excellent drum pattern in both bits as well.
@fuzzy Feb 2022
This is more like watching the silver moonlight and then being kidnapped by aliens.
Really atmospheric.
Whoa, the changeup caught me by surprise!
Loving those swishy swooshy sounds.
Really really great first tune here.
Can't wait to hear what you come up with next!
@beat Feb 2022
Mmhm. Perfect, the sub just left the tube and got out into the dying daylight. Perfect soundtrack. Thx for the music.
@spikedirection Feb 2022
I really like this exactly as it is mate, as others have said it had the feel of a score or soundtrack, especially the moment where the time signature shifts. The one thing that might be the cherry on the cake IMHO might be some vocal samples?
If I have your permission I'd really like to play this during the Fawm section of my show on XRP Radio tonight?
@dreamscuba Feb 2022
A kind of space jazz Bowie vibe going on for me, with a haunting synth melody. I like it.
@readwrite Feb 2022
Caught me in the first moments and held me all the way through; really enjoyed the tempo changes. 9/8 is a classic traditional metre and one of my favorites -- slip jigs and the like -- but you really switched it up with all the overlapping and yet congenial textures, melodies and rhythms -- all those different elements really came together!
@spazsquatch Feb 2022
If memory serves me right, you are 11 or 12 songs behind, plus this one got stuck at 3:17 and I can't hear the other 15 minute of it. ;)
Nice vibe on this one, seriously wouldn't have minded it going on a bit longer.
If you like that film music idea and have a deep love for charitable causes, my kids a student filmmaker.
@captainvulpine Feb 2022
Have you ever dabbled in music for film, or any interest is in it? You're such a sonic worldbuilder and moodsetter, I bet they'd love to have you kicking around Blumhouse Productions.
As far as this song goes; I'm not sure about all them fancy Harry Potter mumbo jumbo words like "Jeskola", but it sounds great, and you are a treasure.
Candle is something to be experienced indeed.
@elesimo Feb 2022
Ohhh, I like this! There's a lot of textures, and they all work nice together to create a mysterious atmosphere. I really enjoyed listening to the song!
