Feb 2022 folk folk-rock school
I've got not much time as I've returned to school to finish my degree in English (with a Poetry concentration) and finished homework early this evening. This isn't very adventurous musically but it said what I needed to say.
My heart starts beating faster
As I walk these steps once more
I'm struggling to remember
This concrete that I've walked before
And the twenty year old me is no damn help at all
No-one laughed when I said
I'm going back to school
But I still feel out of place
I can feel the dread
I still feel the fool
This might be a mistake
Back in school
And all the people that I joked with
Are long gone from this old town
Every face is just a baby
On these once familiar grounds
And the twenty year old me is no damn help at all
No-one laughed when I said
I'm going back to school
But I still feel out of place
I can feel the dread
I still feel the fool
This might be a mistake
Back in school
Would the long-haired me recognize the man I am today?
'Cause the bald-haired man I am still tries not to be afraid
No-one laughed when I said
I'm going back to school
But I still feel out of place
I can feel the dread
I still feel the fool
This might be a mistake
Back in school

Oh this is wonderful, gives me a blast of the Kinks, whom I absolutely loved, and some of Van Morrison's best work. Your singing and phrasing are truly remarkable.
Way, way cool dude. So inspiring. Thank you so much.

This may not be "musically adventurous" to you, but it absolutely conveys the adventure of going back to school. It's a rewarding listen, and I'm happy for you.

Neat song. And you have the skillz to be a good teacher or prof, if that's what you choose to do. Best wishes!

Ahhh presume you're what we call a "mature student" over here..?
First days at school are weird and unnerving... I imagine being around other students who could be your own kids is a bit barmy!
Anyway, really enjoyed the sentiment and the way you've captured the emotion around this new life venture! Way to open your 2022 FAWM. Must have come straight out!

Great song, you capture well the process of this with reflective lyrics and the song is very memorable.

Such a catchy number TC. Has a bit of a Ben folds vibe in its phrasing minus the piano. Excellent recording too. Sounding better than ever.
@nancyrost Feb 2022
I found this really touching, and very relatable. (I was a returning adult student too, with a very similar major.) The melody and vocal performance get a lot of feeling across. Reach out if you ever want to commiserate!

I always am intrigued by the comment "not very interesting musically" . I battle with that myself at times thinking mmmm does that sounds too familiar those chords. So its really good to see someone has the same thoughts, but happily i can tell you the chords and melody combined always make it interesting musically and this is a top example. Actually places i didn't expect it to go but more than that the melody makes this a classic tune i could play over and over. So there you go not only is it interesting, yo've created a classic song. Woohooo

Good song! I also like the line about your younger self, and about the long-haired you and the bald -headed you, ironic touch there. I hope you find time to write more. You do it well.

Great acoustic guitar tone. I can hear a big wall of backing vocals coming in during the chorus.

Very personal. I really liked the long haired vs bald lines. I did the same at the age of 30. I enjoyed it tremendously. You will have an advantage in that you will treat it like a job and not extended high school.

This really sums up how I always feel when I have to take some form of training or certifications or something. You summed this all up so well. Great song. Looking forward to more!

Well done, brilliant song, and well done for getting back to school. Enjoy your time there.

Glad you got one in! But take it easy mate! By the way this is darned nice song! You will do fine on all accounts!

Congrats on so many levels. I always enjoy hearing your music. Always excellent choices with lyrics and music. And you always capture emotions so well. Happy FAWM my friend.

Great lyric and performance. That's a scary proposition, best of luck! I really like the idea of your younger self being no damn help. I can relate, was no help then and no help now either :) Great guitar and drum sound.
I've got several friends who have attempted to go back, some with success and some not so. It has got to be tough when you have more life experience than a professor who has spent their entire life in a classroom, again.. best wishes!

Great lyrics, you deliver this personal song very well. This type of music is perfectly fitting for it. Excellent melody, singing and just...the song overall...I really enjoyed it.

A very well-detailed glimpse into the mind of someone living a common experience in an uncommon way. All put together in a very relatable way.
The line about your past self being no damn help is my favourite - really shows how much time can erase, and your frustration with an unsuspecting person from the past is funny.
I also appreciated the cymbal-bashing: more of it than I expected but it adds to the tension nicely.
