Feb 2022 fuc everyukulele groundhog
I had so much fun doing this! Every ukulele in our house is in this recording: Ohana tenor, Luna Tattoo tenor, Outdoor tenor, Outdoor tenor with Low G, Yamaha guitalele, and a Kala Ukadelic soprano named Starshine (she has flowers painted on the headstock). The two Outdoor ukes also served as drums - the polycarbonate bodies have nice resonance - and Starshine provided string percussion.
Groundhog Day has ancient roots, which inspired the lyrics.
Shadows and Signs
copyright 2022 - words & music by Sharon Stepler
He’s dreaming little groundhog dreams
Outside the snow is falling
But what’s that noise outside his door?
Who’s that calling?
He stumbles out to find a noisy crowd
Gathered to disturb his sleeping
Now they look at him expectantly
As if there are secrets that he’s keeping
Shadows and signs
Looking for answers, looking for rhymes
Shadows and signs
Spring will come in its own time
Can you hear the echoes of tales told long ago -
Magic creatures of winter sleep
Although they won’t admit, they believe a little bit
Ancient memories run so deep
The groundhog sleeps again and dreams a dream
About the crowd who came to find it
Looking for hope against the cold and dark
Wherever they could find it
Shadows and signs
Looking for answers, looking for rhymes
Shadows and signs
Spring will come in its own time
Shadows and signs
Looking for answers, looking for rhymes
Shadows and signs
Spring will come in its own time

It's taken me far too long to pop round for a listen. But I'm so glad I finally made it.
This has a prog rock feel to it. Lovely, charming lyrics with a moody ukulele backing. And as always, your singing is fabulous. :-)
@mhorning Feb 2022
That's a lot of ukes. Everyone is always impressed by my Outdoor Uke. I have tenor in Moonshine I named Ghost. Gorgeous song.
@jamkar Feb 2022
Wow! Yes the ukuleles are premium, but so is your voice. I was captured in the dream right away.
@misterdemp Feb 2022
Fun layers and great choice of lyrics with these sounds. Sense of a deeper mystery of well balanced with the story telling and lightness of the Ukulele arrangements.
@janeg Feb 2022
Best Groundhog Day song ever! From the POV of a sleepy rodent with no idea why the crowd thinks he has secrets. The liner notes made me expect a cacophony but the ukes really compliment each other here.
@robynmackenzie Feb 2022
I just love that chord progression! The ukes all sound splendid together, and your voice is lovely as always. Absolutely beautiful.
@nahlej381 Feb 2022
That’s a lot of ukes! Super cool tune. The Uke symphony is quite moody love the vocal fx nice work!
@whispermouse Feb 2022
I need at LEAST one more uke to string with a low G. I love the gothic feeling here, and appreciate doing it with all-uke ensemble. The vocal hook on "Shadows and signs" is NICE.
@tseaver Feb 2022
Nice write. Having Pete dream about the humans totemizing him is a fun take.
@oswlek Feb 2022
This is fascinating. It was already somewhat unique even before the chorus, but the vocal effect and the dissonant notes being picked were ear perking in the best way, along with the lovely lift in the vocal melody. One of my favorites from your catalog.
@bradbrubaker Feb 2022
Favorite line: "Now they look at him expectantly / As if there are secrets that he’s keeping"
@keithcuts Feb 2022
Lol this POV of the groundhog how cool
Like the chorus vocals contrast
Cool take on the groundhogs take on the day. Fun listen!
@jorh Feb 2022
The chorus is fab!!! Wasn't expecting the switch up as you went into the first chorus and it was such a pleasant surprise - you're higher register sounded great, very kate bushy and ethereal. The explosion of different ukes was an absolute treat too :)
@darcistrutt Feb 2022
Talk about massive ukulele use! Awesome! All the layers are a pleasure. The chorus was ethereal. Beautiful addition to the Groundhog Day songs.
@mahtowin Feb 2022
Wow! Absolutly my subject!
Wonderfull!
@regis Feb 2022
Very cool! I dig the layering and tasteful use of effects.
@kenmattsson Feb 2022
This is so cool. You're channeling my standard bardic vibe. The lyrics are great too.
@mikeb Feb 2022
Wow, that's a lot of ukuleles! A interesting Groundhog Day view, a fun way to get your FAWM going!
@cindyrella Feb 2022
I so love your music by itself but add these perfect lyrics and wow! Sort of surreal, yet so entertaining,!
@stephenwordsmith Feb 2022
I'm impressed at the range of the uke here. It conveys a light-hearted feel, but also some real mysticism. You've also captured the historic feel well, especially in the chorus. It's ethereal, ancient, almost druidical.
@liz561 Feb 2022
Wow-I really loved this-all the different instruments and awesome lyrics. Shadows and signs, spring will come in it's own time. Fantastic. Looking forward to hearing more from you!
