I just discovered the podcast The Old Gods of Appalachia and have been binging it for the past couple of weeks. This song is heavily inspired by that podcast. If you like folklore and spooky things I highly recommend Old Gods.
The Haints in the Holler
I’ll bet you a dollar
And my fattest night crawler
That all the haints in the holler
Will be coming out tonight
The red moon is shinin
There’s a tinglin in my spine and
The wind it seems is pinin
For a grim and gory rite
I hear werewolves howlin
And the roogaroos a prowlin
Every bird of prey is scowlin
And there’s a rustlin in the leaves
So we best head on home now
Cuz there’s no way and no how
I’ll be caught dead with my pants down
On this dark and spooky eve
But before we say good evenin
And from you I take my leave and
We avoid this awful reavin
Can you help a fella out?
There’s something I’m a needin
I’m beggin and a pleadin
For just a little bit of bleedin
From your sweet and tender throat!
I’m sorry for the deceivin
I know yer family will be grievin
But a haint has got to eat and
You’re blood’s a pretty sight
And so I’ll bet you a dollar
And my fattest night crawler
That every haint in the holler
Is runnin wild tonight
Is out for blood tonight
Out like me
Tonight

I love a creative near-rhyme! The casual banjo has a great vibe. I just learned the word "haints" a couple months back reading Harrow County, so it's a delight to run into the word again so soon. The blood here is indeed a pretty sight. Well done.

Yeah! Sparse banjo is the perfect accompaniment for this tune. Like a campfire ghost story, this is just the right blend of spook and fun. Love the twist ending and all your rhymes.

A grim and gory tale indeed. Nice work on painting that picture. The murderous flip at the end is a great touch. Nice work!
