my first skirmish this year!
Rigmarole
Deirdre M. Murphy
Em Bm
There’s a form here and a fee there
Am Bm
You’ve got to know all your numbers
Em Bm
Your eye color and each public affair
Am Bm Em
And every fact that encumbers
G D
Why is paperwork like this?
C D
It all seems like gobbledygook!
G D
I want to escape its inky abyss
C D Em
And get lost in a fantasy book.
Initial here, sign on that line
Then do it again in triplicate
This copy’s yours, that one’s mine
Bow down to the bureaucrat’s dictate
Why is paperwork like this?
There’s way too much rigmarole
I want to escape its inky abyss
And get back all the time it stole
Yes, why is paperwork like this?
It’s nothing but botheration
I want to eacape its inky abyss
And just go on a vacation!

Great topic... "gobbledygook" - one of my favourite words...this song made me laugh. Lovely playing and great singing. Well done. #tit4tat

Oh and if you like, you could add a sequel to this song about the time lost and mental burden because of the guilt of postponing it : https://bouletcorp.com/2021/08/19/8294/

Now this is a tragedy I can easily relate to ! I think Rampa, the demon character from Good Omens invented administrative forms.
Those harmonies seems to have escaped from neverwhen-of-the-dream.
I which I would have known the word Rigmarole when I translated La loghorrée sauvage (the wild loghorrea) into english.

I really wish there was a 'LIKE' button here, because I really like it and don't know what else to say. ;-)
@janeg Feb 2022
And later this morning, instead of listening to music or writing another song, I am meeting my charity’s CEO so I can sign N+? Times on legal and financial documents. And I spent 21 years as a bureaucrat then escaped that abyss (and its income).
@philkmills Feb 2022
As a once-upon-a-time government employee...yeah.
Nice melody!
@liz561 Feb 2022
Love the throwback feel on this!
@jwhanberry Feb 2022
"botheration" is a great word. It should be on this year's list of new dictionary entries. All that paperwork is, indeed, a giant pain!
@berni1954 Feb 2022
Ah, you sound like a Bard from some fantasy novel...
Fun song with a hard hitting social comment underbelly.
Your narrator should never come to live on the Iberian Peninsula - the paperwork here for the simplest of thing is truly Kafkaesque.
@whispermouse Feb 2022
Lovely autoharp playing. I like the "Winnie the Pooh" vocabulary here (if you'll allow that comparison) - "gobbledygook," "botheration" and the rest. Nice skirmish!
@sheilerk Feb 2022
I love the words rigamarole, and botheration! I agree, there is always way too much paperwork. For everything! I love your take on this. Hard for anyone not to relate!
@vivalarayna Feb 2022
"I want to escape its inky abyss/And get back all the time it stole" - this made me laugh. Clever take on the prompt. As one who is on a massive cleanout, the amount of paperwork I *have* to keep is maddening. You really captured the feeling here!
@auditasum Feb 2022
The autoharp has such a pretty sound! Paperwork is one of the great evils of this world.
@ajna1960 Feb 2022
I would never have guessed this as a topic for my theme ! Brilliant take on the baggage thing, love it.
I especially enjoyed the sound like they mean words. You used quite a few and it was a lot of fun.
@mikeskliar Feb 2022
ha, what a creative take on the 'too much baggage' prompt! and autoharp- sounds great! nice work!
