This is my first song of my first FAWM! I've been reading a lot about eels recently, and this one came pretty quickly. Definitely not a song I would have written without the pressure to write. Hope you like it.
I know a boy who was little and lonely
Fished for an eel and he brought it home
Said “Mama look at me, look at what I’ve done.”
She said “I didn’t raise a killer, you are not my son.”
That house was very lonely
That was what he told me
And late at night, he could hear that call
The singing of the eel living in those walls.
I know a boy who grew up in fear
Listening to fishes only he could hear
“Mama, oh mama, forgive your son.
He knows not what he’s done.”
That house was full of noises
And underwater voices
And through it all, you could hear that call
The singing of the eel, living in the walls.
An eel is a fish with a glittering eye
Nobody’s ever seen one die
Born with a need to return to the sea
He doesn’t hate you baby he just wants to be free.
I know a boy who’s come back grown
Been away a long time but he’s come back home
“Mama look at me, look at what I’ve become.”
That house is full of corners
And they are full of mourners
But don’t you listen to them baby, let them mutter and frown.
It’s your house now, we can burn it down.

Haunting and surreal. Well done!

This song is just brilliant, there's so much to love here! It's so evocative and strange and sparse and, most of all, the lyrics are stellar, so much imagery and mystery, delivered with just the right touch!!!! If you release this, I would love s copy!

I love the lyricism for this; it feels so visual and warm <3

Thanks for your comment! I think this Eel song is killer. Great, haunting lyrics that really paint a strong image.

Oh this resonates. The childhood slapdowns, they persist for decades. And yes, "it's your house now, we can burn it down". But it's a long long time for that release.
Okay, technical: it's an evocative lyric, and the imagery of the eel in the walls is striking. The tragedy of th interpersonal relations. The subtle accompaniment and the quiet voice work really well . (Mind you, I could kill Soundcloud for blowing the ears away with their wretched adds. Might be better if you increase the gain on your next song!)
