Feb 2022 bodice-ripper tango piano one-take
Very out of practice with recording, so I wanted to get this down quickly in a single take, boffs and improvised solo and all. I do wonder if it needs another verse.
Thought it was a cold case
A prehistoric mistake
Till you opened that file
Resurrecting a smile that melted my senses
You dance in another’s embrace
Making me think I am safe
Still your eyes smolder
Looking over a shoulder at me
We both know it’s just part of the dance when we both look away
And it’s only a matter of time till I’m under your sway
I’ve been dancing with an arsonist
Yeah, I’m covered in your fingerprints
Illicit, complicit
With every step out of line
When they take you away I will pay with a heart that is lonely
Before you go I hope you can let me down slowly
I’ve been dancing with an arsonist
Yeah, I’m covered in your fingerprints
Illicit, complicit
With every step out of line
Illicit, complicit
With every step out of line

Aaah Tango ! so sensual and trouble and wicked both... Those words were perfect for it !
@sherrycanary Feb 2022
This song is the personification of the Tango.
It all works so well.
What a treat! Well done
@shutyatrap Feb 2022
Oh nice stuff. The title and your lovely playing gives it a real mysterious tone. I could imagine this playing as the credits roll in a TV show.
@kadmad202 Feb 2022
Tango! Such an exotic genre, and you have nailed it. Your lyrics are so clever and evocative. I am seeing this story unfold in black and white, an interesting sub-plot to some 1930s gangster flick (George Raft, Joan Blondell?), whose main message is "crime doesn't pay." Was going to try and find my favorite line, but there are so many of them. Nice!
@auditasum Feb 2022
What a title! Skillful melding of crime and romance. That improvised solo! Wish I could play the piano like that.
@tamsnumber4 Feb 2022
Love that second verse, really sets a scene and love this rhythm, what a great song!
@misterdemp Feb 2022
Wonderful intimate piano and soulful vocal. For me as well, great to hear a fellow WI person making such fantastic music!
@petemurphy Feb 2022
Now THIS is fabulous.
First of all, the title is brilliant.
I love me some hot tango jazz.
Your performance is wonderful.
This is right up there in my 'FAWM 2022' favourites.
@mikegtz Feb 2022
Interesting Tango kind of song here. Keep this one Nancy and build on it!!
@elesimo Feb 2022
Nancy, this is so good! Love the piano, it's so full of character... and your voice is made for the song.
@srcoops Feb 2022
I can't dance a lick but this makes me want to.
@isaacq Feb 2022
"bodice-ripper" made me guffaw! and it really is, too. i love how the kinda stop-start quality of the pre-chorus vocals convey that doomed trepidation before the seduction. exotic and erotic and enchanting stuff
@bootsylavox Feb 2022
Hot, hot, HOTTT.
@janeg Feb 2022
What everybody else said. Hope after FAWM you will make a video of this dance.
@nobodyofficial Feb 2022
Very mysterious, and a great one take!
@paulotteson Feb 2022
Love this. Arsonist dances the tarantella/tango?.. The timing and delivery here are perfect - Love the mood, and your lyrics are divine.
@sarahk Feb 2022
Nancy Rost, how do I love thy songwriting? Let me count the ways.
1. Tantalizing title
2. Tango tune
3. Terrific (t)lyric
@lowhum Feb 2022
Always wanted to learn to articulate on the piano so it's that danceable! Like the close and augmentated intervals. Cinematic and bouncy.
@pooka Feb 2022
Your voice really works well with simplistic piano.
@jerrypettit Feb 2022
Wow! Really interesting lyrics and I do love the piano accompaniment.
Nice vocal and nice job all around!
@bethkille Feb 2022
Your title is so enticing! I can totally see these characters dancing to this song. When is the music vid coming out?
@cts Feb 2022
Nope - it doesn't need another verse. It's like a heard a short story. It's complete just as it is. In the last verse, as you hold the note on "down" that resonated with me deeply; triggering something. I'm not sure why (then again, maybe I do).
@mikedebenham Feb 2022
Charming as hell. Your usual mix of wit and strong imagery. Feels like an old black-and-white film, all cigarette smoke and lipstick. I tore through three and half bodices while listening.
@johncrossman Feb 2022
I like to listen to new Nancy songs twice in a row. Like H said, it doesn't need another verse unless the story does, but I'm getting more impressions than an arc. +1 on the strong fingerprint image, and the push/pull of the dance. Bodice-burner?
@stephenwordsmith Feb 2022
This song takes legs (and fabulous shoes) and simply dances off the page. You almost don't need the words to tell the story, but the words that are there are glib and cunning and as fancy as the footwork. Marvellous.
@robynmackenzie Feb 2022
Lots of cool Nancy Rost swagger here. I like the jazz feel of the bouncy piano. The lyrics tell an evocative story. I really like the line "I'm covered in your fingerprints."
@owl Feb 2022
Excellent melodies and that “illicit, complicit” refrain is so catchy. I love the imagery here.
@helenseviltwin Feb 2022
Lovely! I don't think it *needs* another verse, but if you have more story to tell, it could certainly cope with it. Great tango feel and cool story too.
@mikeskliar Feb 2022
I love this!!!! that 'fractured tango' musical background is perfect for this fun and wicked lyric. 'part of the dance when we both look away' and 'illicit, complicit, with every step out of line' are both killer lines, too!
great work! (and really nice sounding recording, too!)
@francesriley Feb 2022
Love the underground nightclub vibe this song was giving. Great lyrics!!
@gammafied Feb 2022
I love a tango! Nice slow burn effect the long stanzas. I like the solo bit so much. Nice use of space overall.
@dasbinky Feb 2022
The Tango Rost...
Much fun! I look forward to playing guiro or something underneath this one. Great turns of phrase.
@kenmattsson Feb 2022
I imagine you playing this with hair draped over one eye in a smoky bar, and men in zoot suits asking you to dance. Very sultry. Love it.
@standup Feb 2022
Love the keywords.
I like the detail that this cold case involves an arsonist, and I was waiting for a fire to break out. But that’s just their job description, like you were dancing with a plumber.
Nice mood, a bit of menace, a bit of danger and regret.
Not enough tango in FAWM. Or bodice-ripping.
@phylo Feb 2022
Wonderful. Oh, Nancy, you're an arteest! I'm in awe.
@spazsquatch Feb 2022
Oh my, I had no idea that "bodice ripper" was a term. That is gold. I need to add that to the old grey matter database for later on. A well chosen tag for the song for sure.
I really like your performance on this.
@unkept Feb 2022
Really nice words, especially the chorus and the way your piano playing sets mood and beat.
@jackketch Feb 2022
I love this! It reminded me a bit of Tom Wait. Great lyrics.
