Feb 2022 folk singer-songwriter acoustic
This is a song I’ve been wanting to write for a few weeks now, but haven’t been sure how it would present itself. I’ve been listening to a lot of folk and bluegrass music for the band that I play in, so the relatively bland harmonic palette of cowboy chords on the guitar was what I reached for right away with this song. I would like to take more time to develop it further with more colorful chords so it isn’t so static, but I only had about an hour and a half to write and record this the first time, so this is how it sounds for now. My main jumping off point was the verse harmony and melody in “I’ve Got Something On My Mind” by The Left Banke. I really like the vocal harmonies that go I-V at the end of each line, so I stole that and used it in this song. Speaking of stealing, I also ended up kinda ripping off the chorus of “Time Stand Still” by Rush. Let me know what you think of it, and maybe what you would do differently in terms of form and harmony to keep things sounding fresh and energized. Thanks for listening!
[Verse 1]
I see a brown-haired girl topped with a silly Carhart hat
She’s precious to me, and so is her little bitty mini cat
Always goofin, playing music late into the night
This love is deeper than any other I’ve had grow deep inside
[Pre-Chorus]
She might be
She could be
Can’t know for sure but I have a hunch…
[Verse 2]
I feel so secure with her; she makes me feel safe
A warmth I find with her and that I cannot replicate
In anyone else I know
She makes me want to grow
[Pre-Chorus]
She might be
She could be
Can’t know for sure but I have a hunch…
[Chorus]
She’s my forever girl
Making my life better, growing close together
Forever girl
Washing doubt away in iridescent cascades
Forever girl
Helping me relax and not take life so fast
Forever girl
Making my life better, growing old together
[Verse 3]
I see an indie girl rockin out to some that dog.
David Bowie, The Beatles, Phish, and a touch of folky pop
Always jammin, playing music late into the night
Our love is deeper than any other I’ve had grow deep inside
[Pre-Chorus]
She might be
She could be
[Verse 4]
I feel so secure with her; she makes me feel safe
A warmth I find with her and that I cannot replicate
In anyone else I know
She makes me want to grow
[Pre-Chorus]
She might be
She could be
Can’t know for sure but I have a hunch…
[Chorus]
She’s my forever girl
Making my life better, growing close together
Forever girl
Washing doubt away in iridescent cascades
Forever girl
Helping me relax and not take life so fast
Forever girl
Making my life better, growing old together
[Chorus]
Forever girl
Making my life better, growing close together
Forever girl
Washing doubt away in iridescent cascades
Forever girl
Helping me relax and not take life so fast
Forever girl
Making my life better, growing old together

That Pre-Chorus is a little nugget of songwriting goodness! Getchu a man who writes songs about you like this tbh.
I love those harmonies you pointed out in the liner notes, honestly all the harmonies here are great.
More BriGuy bangers, love to see it. Glad you didn't resolve at the end. That made the song go from good to great imo

This is a terrific song on so many levels! The overall feel of the song is upbeat, yet relaxed, which replicates the sentiment behind your lyrics beautifully. I particularly enjoy the contrast of feeling safety and growth in a relationship. Great full band feel, and the vocal harmonies are just right! I've already played this a half dozen times. Well done!!

Good to see you here again this year Brian! A very strong first FAWM track! Love the chord progression and the harmonies are great. It's a such a nice, little folky tune. Looking forward to your new content!

Man, that’s so sweet! I don’t think it would “make it better” as it’s already got a real charming indie/folks feel, but in the bluegrass tradition I grew up folks loved to hang onto and stretch the vowels at the end of phrases as a way to feature real tight harmonies. A good example is A Ghost Whispers by a band called Red Tail Ring. It may be fun to play with.
