I literally got a thorn in my hand. And couldn't get the whole thing out. And that led to this song.
VERSE 1
Got a ghost of a thorn in the palm of your hand
Touch the part that’s tender
Can’t help but remember
How he looked when you told him that it wasn’t working out like you’d planned
That your love felt worn
Like the ghost of a thorn
CHORUS
You can lock away all the little things that mean so very little
Freeze out every memory and break them once they’re brittle
Look away and let them be
Every little tragedy
Every little tragedy
VERSE 2
There’s a hint of a tear in the map that you fold
Reminds you that you’re lost
And of all the lines you crossed
And how it felt when he told you that he never thought you’d act so cold
Like you just didn’t care
Like the hint of tear
CHORUS
VERSE 3
There’s a feather of a kiss that he leaves behind
Brush your fingertips
Past the corner of your lips
Makes you think of all the things that he does that make you want to change your mind
Brush away all of this
Like the feather of a kiss
CHORUS
OUTRO
Got a ghost of a thorn in the palm of your hand

Sometimes I listen to a song and just never getting around to making a comment, for any one of many possible reasons. That happened here. I just came back to this song and immediately recalled how much I liked this first time around. This is really a gem. I love the guitar and your vocal delivery on this is so sweet and tender. And the lyrics are special. So many fantastic lines, like this "Freeze out every memory and break them once they’re brittle"...and more. The melody lines are haunting too, in the best possible way.
@tamsnumber4 Feb 2022
Beautiful vocal and guitar playing, the melody matches the lyric so well. I like the three examples of the "little tragedies" and how they are developed in the verses.
@jonmeta Feb 2022
This is expert songwriting -- being able to take a simple image that anyone can relate to and draw deep meaning out of it, then transform and amplify it with other equally poignant (!) images that bring out other facets of meaning. I like that you found "ghost" instead of some more obvious word: it's fine poetry, imo. The delivery, your voice and guitar, is lovely.
@truetone Feb 2022
Great song! Nice melody and I really like the cadence of the lyrics.
@fonte Feb 2022
Ok. Holy moly. This is awesome. Beautiful playing. Singing. Lyrics. All amazing. And I absolutely love the idea that this came form a literal thorn. Sounds classic already, only one listen (so far).
@danvaillancourt Feb 2022
Love the finger-style guitar. Beautiful vocals, melody and phrasing.
@stephentanner Feb 2022
That guitar part is so warm. The vocals are beautiful and the lyrics are stunning. Love it.
@nahlej381 Feb 2022
1stly…OW! Thorns are not nice! But I’m glad you were inspired to make this super cool song! Your performance is top notch!
@paulmauled Feb 2022
superb. love your fingerpicking and your phrasing. you paint an interesting picture.
@elesimo Feb 2022
Oh, wow... what a beautiful song, your voice is just heavenly. Love how you made such profound lyrics from a small splinter! So beautiful.
@richaaaay Feb 2022
So glad I just listened to this song. Clean crisp fingerpicking throughout supports your authentic beautiful voice as it delivers these wonderful lyrics. Your words here are so evocative. Thanks for the little gift...
@rvines Feb 2022
Your voice really sounds great! Really interesting melody and imagery!
@guatecoop Feb 2022
I really love your voice and guitar and how they flow so comfortably together. Your melody is so pretty and it’s amazing to me that you got the spark from a thorn of all things!! Well done!
@analogj Feb 2022
This is gorgeous, Eric. Beautiful imagery. Really nice playing, and you have a lovely, subtly expressive instrument of a voice.
@victoriavox Feb 2022
beautiful Erin. Love the lyric and verse development. Kudos to you!!!
@davidtaro Feb 2022
Ooof. I'm wincing at the thought. So lovely to hear you playing and singing again, Erin. Bloody hell, you're good! The guitar sounds really really fab, very clear and rich. And your vocal is stunning, you've got such great expression (lines like 'break them when they're brittle' for example). I love how you've taken what is basically a domestic accident and developed it out into a whole story of love and loss. Spotting those opportunities is one of those things that makes songwriters special (and slightly odd). Great start, well done :)
@liz561 Feb 2022
Erin, your voice is so gorgeous and I absolutely love the line cliches in the guitar part. Put those with such fantastic lyrics and magic ensues. What a wonderful start to FAWM!!
@celineellis Feb 2022
the ghost of a thorn - oh my days. like even when you have removed it, you still think its in there. you can still feel it like its in there still. so gorgeous! that second verse is absolutely killer!!
@andygriff Feb 2022
What a gorgeous voice and playing. How brilliant that something so simple could lead to a lovely lyric like this
@mikedebenham Feb 2022
Beautiful stuff. A whole complex relationship captured in a few striking images, and great fingerpicking to boot. Lovely.
@emmasully19 Feb 2022
This is so pretty and the lyrics have so much imagery. Love it :)
@suehaney Feb 2022
Oh wow!
I especially like the chord you go to for the second "every little tragedy." It's a heart-string puller.
@mikegtz Feb 2022
Erin, these lyrics are so delicate that they really demand to be listened to as the song goes on. A beautiful song. Like the imagery of "the feather of a kiss" in particular.
@blainev83 Feb 2022
I’m not crying, you’re crying! Seriously though, beautiful. Your voice just incredible, warm and comforting. Great lyrics.
@loveonamixtape Feb 2022
Sorry, there's a little something in my eye (no, but seriously, I...am tearing up listening to this.) Your voice has such beautiful clarity -- generally, and I'm struck again by it again with this performance. You're also so good at mirroring structure in your lyrics from verse to verse, and using that to create the most striking and/or heartbreaking narrative progressions, with just enough detail to paint a clear emotional picture, and just enough space for the listener to fill in their own experience. Your imagery with the opening line of each verse is so gorgeously evocative, and that last verse especially really got me, in particular something about that "Makes you think of all the things that he does that make you want to change your mind" line.
@tukayandryan Feb 2022
So beautiful Erin. Love this. Love that something so simple led to this gorgeousness. Can't wait to hear more
@jennakole Feb 2022
So beautiful! Feels like Harry Chapin.
Just lovely all around. Guitar part is perfect, vocals and melody are sweet and heartbreaking. Lyrics are tactile and urgent.
Nice work!
@leslie333 Feb 2022
How beautiful! When I saw the title it intrigued me before I even realized it was yours. Wow!
@serene123 Feb 2022
So beautifully poetic. Thank goodness for that thorn that gave us this lovely song! Very strong song.. lovely vocals as usual!
@sunnymae Feb 2022
Wow...this is brilliant. Your guitar playing is stellar and your vocals have a wonderful timbre. I feel you in the center of this very well penned song. The lyrics are standalone. I really enjoyed listening thru!
@kenmattsson Feb 2022
Damn girl! You're coming out hot from the get go. This is soooo good, and classic Erin. I love the little-brittle rhyme. Your singing and playing are super tight. Congrats on your first FAWM 2022 song!
@bethdesombre Feb 2022
Welcome to FAWM! This is gorgeous I love the concept of "ghost of a thorn" (and the parallel "hit of a tear") and what you do with line lengths and internal rhymes; such an Erin song, with tiny images that reveal the world (and that the song elaborates).
@eas3637 Feb 2022
@bethdesombre just fixed it...
@bethdesombre Feb 2022
OKAY; I take it back -- link working now. Not sure why it wasn't. Comments in a minute . . .
