I noticed on Twitter yesterday that comedian Ricky Gervais is aiming to "get cancelled" by his new Netflix special.
This irritated me to the point I made a song of it: why so many stand up comedians I really liked when I was younger have lazied up and are just relying on cheap laughs and complaining that "you're not allowed to say anything anymore"?
I mean Jesus Christ, you're getting paid millions to do this show and you've made up zero new jokes for it!
This was inspired by Ricky, but it also goes to Bill Burr, Joe Rogan etc. who have now switched being funny to just being carbon copies of each other: complaining in a public forum how they can't "say anything" anymore. Yeah, right.
And also to you, Jerry Seinfeld. "People are too PC for my material!" You made jokes about MILK. Maybe try being funny for a change?
About the song: I think I accidentally wrote almost a carbon copy of one of my old songs. Used the exact same setup as last time, so it even sounds like my previous FAWM song.
But then again, I think it's just fitting.
I haven’t seen you in years
Or maybe lot more
So when I saw your face again
I thought
We could meet maybe once more
Just like those old days
When we used to laugh
When you were so witty and lovely and sass
Nothing could have happened to that
Right?
But when I heard your first uttered phrase
I felt the need to cover my face
I’m just glad we didn’t meet at a public place
I’m offended
Yes, I’m offended
That you dare call these fresh jokes
I’m offended
Yes, I’m offended
I thought these were old 20 years ago
I’m offended
Yes, offended
That your show is plagiarised
I’m offended
Yes, offended
What happened to writing clever lines?
There you’re standing on stage
And rambling on
I’m waiting for the first punchline to come
But there’s nothing coming on
And then you segue into this weird encore
When you complain you can’t say some things anymore
While saying exactly those things on the show
What happened to you dude?
Why would you think edgy equals fun?
Did you run out of ideas or just become a lazy son-of-a
I’m offended
Yes, I’m offended
It’s like you forgot there’s a setup and punchline too
I’m offended
Yes, still offended
That whole “cancel culture” bit is like airline food
I’m offended
Yes, I’m offended
Being annoying is not an art
I’m offended
Yes, still offended
That you made me laugh less than my fart
I’m offended
Yes, offended
You used to be so much fun
But now you’re a cu

"What happened to writing clever lines?" Apparently that job went to you! ;D I laughed out loud so many times during this song. So cleverly written, and what a great idea for a song! What's more, even without the fabulous lyrics and great vocals, this song would still be a hit. That bouncy rhythm and that catchy chord progression could stand on their own two feet. I give YOU the encore!

Clever word play, fun frolicsome performance, heart and intelligence - the world is a better place for having this song in it :)
Thank you for putting there!

Adorable verse melody, reminds me a little bit of some of Ben Folds work!! Has a similarly light energy to it

Sad to hear that this is your last fawm. Since this kind of storytelling and brit-feel -pop is something you've gotten really good at - and keep on getting better. This is some of your finest writing this far. Both on the lyrics, song writing and how you sing it - really expressive. Good job Tuomas!

I totally feel this. 'comedians' complaining that they can't say anything anymore can just f off. Your song is so catchy and I really enjoyed listening.
@nikopee Feb 2022
Very nice piece of pop music! This could easily be used outside of FAWM, too.

Love your take on this and the arrangement fits it perfectly. “Lazied up” indeed - I’m offended too! :-)
@bradbrubaker Feb 2022
I absolutely love that you spin the idea of offended to being turned off to the extreme by lame artistic choices vs being offended by the content itself. Very relatable to me as not much makes me blush, but I hate lazy jokes.

Love the piano, perfect accompaniment to the cheery and bouncy lyrics. Great production too, love that synth when it comes in on the chorus. Nice stuff!
@kanttila Feb 2022
Fun tune. You delivery the lyrics well with this upbeat instrumental and melody. The ending cu-cu-cu chant is the best part, haha well done!
@mikeskliar Feb 2022
I love this, it’s totally brilliant, and I’m with you 1000% on the sentiment behind it.( I’m only offended that I didn’t think of this idea first and run with it but it would not have been nearly as great as the way you did it.!) The airline food line as well as that great fake out last word ending our great touches by the way. (Someone else sadly in this category along with those you mentioned in your liner notes is Bill Maher, who I’ve sadly lately found unwatchable with his ramblings on and on about cancel culture etc.)

Love it dude! Good to hear you again!
@matthijs Feb 2022
Love the chorus! The upbeat feel really fits with the lyrics. Good job!
