My interpretation of W1 Challenge: Body Part
I wanted to write a song about dismemberment and it ended up going into a metaphorical direction for a story of surviving any sort of violence
flagged NSFW because I couldn't flag it PG-13
[Verse 1]:
My fingers are chopped off
My spine is exposed and my senses are on fire, oh I
Down to my toes now
He’s cutting me up with a blade of serrated ire, oh I
I’m nothing but stubs now
They’ve blinded me, gouged out my eyes, oh, but I can see alright
She’s reaching inside me
But I’m shielding my soul with the pain that they want me to feel
[Chorus 1]:
You can take it all from me
You can skin me and pull out my teeth
Mangle me until my bones are ground up
Into the grit of the earth you float high above
But no one’s gonna touch my worth
If I bleed, if my heart is freed
From the cage of my ribs
I have no fear
You’re gonna have to rip all of the words from my lips,
My dear
[Verse 2]:
I heed my surroundings
I listen with ears hanging loosely off my head, oh hey
It looms in the shadows
The permanent darkness that pulses and pierces through, ooh
My will is a mountain
No shovel, no scalpel, no knife can dig out my roots
[Chorus 2]:
Oh, you can take it all from me
You can skin me and pull out my teeth
Strangle me, bludgeon me, pack my meat
You can kill me but I’ll never let you get another hold of me
‘Cause you’re not gonna touch my worth
I may bleed, if my heart is freed
From the cage of my ribs
I have no fear
You’re gonna have to rip all of these words from my lips,
My dear
[Chorus 3]:
For everyone who’s ever been in
These shoes, if you’ve bumped into evil
And got up bruised
If your loved one did or did not pull through
No one’s gonna shut us up
We are free, we are young and feared
We are loved, we’ve gone numb
But we’re always here
And no matter what, we shine so much brighter than our light appears

great lyrics, the alternating speed of the melody works really well in the chorus.

Such visceral violent lyrics juxtaposed with sweet ukey n your honey baritone. Love the lyrics, esp ''Cause you’re not gonna touch my worth
I may bleed, if my heart is freed'' Bloody great song!

Your voice is so damned good. This is so cleanly sung, played, written — hard to believe it's a oner. Extra fav line: "I listen with ears hanging loosely off my head"

This is such a unique approach to the challenge! Although the lyrics are dark and gruesome the song could pass as a cute little happy song if you don’t pay attention to the lyrics. I loved the metaphor of surviving violence. Great song!

What a brilliant idea. This is very powerful, obviously goes very dark but also very hopeful with that last verse. Great singing, phrasing, and ukulele playing as well

It's amazing how a ukulele can make the darkest of subjects sound cheerful. But I love the way the song turns to hope as it progresses. :-)

Wow, quite a contrast between the dark lyrics and the happy sound of the uke! It makes the last chorus sound particularly hopeful.
