First song for this year's FAWM! This started out with a guitar part that sounded like ZZ Top's La Grange with a Vampire Weekend vocal and ended up as a mid-career Elvis Costello song.
i'm only waiting for the dam to break
while the bills pile up at your open door
there's an 'i told you so' that's waiting to escape
from the tip of my tongue and make its way to you
you've got your finger on the trigger
and your head in the clouds
and a paperback picture
of the way you're living now
you're the one pretending you were true
i have come to my senses but i can't say the same for you
it's the one thing i had promised you
the world won't stop
and let you off
you're always planning for your great escape
could've just walked through the open door
for years and years you've waited for your big break
while you paced a path of doubt across your floor
you've got your finger on the pulse
and your head in the sand
with jack and johnnie plotting how to
drown you on dry land
you're the one pretending you were true
i have come to my senses but i can't say the same for you
it's the one thing i had promised you
the world won't stop
and let you off
it's the one thing i had promised you
the world won't stop
and let you off
I'm only waiting for the dam to break
when you walk through that open door

It's very rare, these days, that someone's singing style turns my head but yours does. You seem to channel Dylan, Costello and Randy Newman but with your own distinctive style. And this is another amazing song. The lyrics are packed with great lines
your head in the clouds
and a paperback picture
of the way you're living now
i have come to my senses but i can't say the same for you
I see what you mean about mid-career Costello - this song could have been on Blood and Chocolate, or Brutal Youth. Btw - a great melody - feels familiar and totally new at the same time.

o gosh yes hello Mr Costello. That soaring voice works beautifully over the acoustic. Simple and honest. Great lyric. Great delivery.
A real pleasure thank you!
