Feb 2022 indie-folk funny heartbreak
Oh, what a night! Early February back in '22! Oh what a night! It's the second song on the first day of FAWM and this one came together very quickly.
My fourth song idea bore some fruit and became an answer to the theme of the weekly challenge. My ode to Slim Goodbody never made it past just thinking about it and chuckling.
This one is pretty straightforward, with just a single guitar (my Ibanez Artcore Expressionist AM93ME semi-hollow, for those keeping score) in 3/4 and mostly just a single vocal track. But it is my first song to have a whistling solo on it, to which I added copious amounts of reverb.
You can also hear my cat Jax meowing on this at various points. He was literally crawling over me and rubbing against my microphone while I was trying to emote this insightful tune.
I definitely hear the Alanis and Billy Corgan influence on this one. And maybe a little Weird Al in spirit.
Sometimes there comes a person
Who can simply do no wrong
If you're that type of person
I wrote you this song
The ways that I feel for you,
You will never know
But know that I feel it
Down to my toes
Down to my toes
Lend me your ear and I'll bend it
Get a leg up and I'll break it
Give me your heart and I'll break that, too
I'm just the jerk who has nothing, nothing to lose
The manners I despise thee
Are many anon
I'm singing this medieval
Cause now it's game on!
There's no use eluding
This song's about you
Who thought that you could do no wrong
But that's just untrue!
That's just untrue!
Lend me your ear and I'll bend it
If you get a leg up I will break it
Give me your heart and I'll break that, too
I'm just a jerk who has nothing, nothing to prove
SOLO
So when I started singing
I tried to be nice to you
Spare your pathetic feelings
And try to be couth
But there's just no point now
Confronting my foes
You know that I hate you all
Down to your toes
Down to your toes
So lend me your ear, I'll bend it
You get a leg up I will break it
If you give me your heart I will break that, too
Cause I'm just a jerk who has nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing to prove

Some great lines, here John. These lyrics merit a few listens to figure out exactly whether this narrator is a true misogynist or not?

I love weird combinations of tags and topics. Fun and heartbreak just made me listen to this song. Good idea to go 6/8 and vocal acting. Self deprecation humour yes.

Love the guitar. Fun lyrics! Love that little Beatles riff and self-effacing humor. The whistling is a nice touch!

That Ibanez sounds great. I'm singing this medieval - great line. I also like - I'm just the jerk who has nothing, nothing to lose. God, what an image that conjures. Billy, Alanis, and Al? Solid trio there.

I like the parts of this song that defy expectations. Like the "lend me your ear" totally felt like a Beatles nod (I assume it was intentional) and then it did almost the opposite feel of what you expect. Also interesting harmonies and whistling (and cat sounds).

I love it, especially the cat solo. Good work, sir.

I really like the guitar picking especially that downward line. Always go for whistles with cat mews in the background. Ha! Funny lyric that I hope isn’t autobiographical.

Hahahaha I dig this!
@mahtowin Feb 2022
Oh, this is so funny! I can imagine the recording situation with your cat :-)))
@cmharris Feb 2022
Fun! I hope you further develop this song cause it has great lyrics.

I clicked on the random button to get this song. Be fore I could listen, I scrolled to see the lyrics. The verse before the solo made me bust out laughing. The medieval verse is just perfect. I like how the song started out nice, but surely its true purpose was revealed. Nice storytelling!

Come on now, tell us how you really feel. :0))))))
I love this!! You killed me on the chorus. It's so evil and fabulous. Love your writing, guitar work and wry sense of humor. Kudos to your cat too.
Great work!
