This is my 2nd FAWM. Had a productive 2021. Feeling some self-imposed pressure to write write write again. Song #1 found me focusing on the chorus more than verses, but the verses have their moments.
Songwriter says to the pot dealer, “All I need is a hit!”
Dealer replies, “Maybe I can help you with that…
…You have got to learn to free your mind
You have got to learn to free your mind
You have got to learn to free your mind
It comes to you in time
Songwriter says to the car mechanic, “I don’t know how much more of this I can take.”
Mechanic says, “Friend, you’ve just had some bad breaks.”
You have got to learn to free your mind
You have got to learn to free your mind
You have got to learn to free your mind
It comes to you in time
Good things come
Good things go
Some of them things take time
Some of ‘em take your soul
Songwriter says to the therapist, "I have anger issues from a very early age.”
Therapist says, “Anger issues are all the rage.”
You have got to learn to free your mind
You have got to learn to free your mind
You have got to learn to free your mind
It comes to you in time
Bread baker says to the songwriter, “It’s nothing you don’t already know,
You don’t always have to love it, you just have to knead the dough.”
Blackjack dealer says to the songwriter, “I know exactly how you feel.
When I got this gig, I didn’t know how to deal.”
You have got to learn to free your mind
You have got to learn to free your mind
You have got to learn to free your mind
It comes to you in time
Good things take time
All things take perspective
When everything is taking
Somethin’s gotta give
Songwriter says to anyone still listening, pointing out the obviously
That thing your momma said about the best things in life are free
You have got to learn to free your mind
You have got to learn to free your mind
You have got to learn to free your mind
It comes to you in time

Well done, Greg! Taxi driver said to the songwriter, you have to pay your fare share of dues.

The guitar was so full of rhythm, and I especially love the 2 opening lines - think we could all relate to that “all I need is a hit” line. The “free you mind” was a fab hook too, i love how you drawer it out and made it extra groovy

Wow, there is some wisdom. Oprah would call it the "Aha-moment" .... thanks for sharing this golden nugget of songwriter-truth. The puns in the verse are next level!

A new classic folk song right here! Love the double entendres, fun chorus and equally fun jokes. I'm harmonizing the chorus right now hahaha.

I figured start with a chorus that people can sing along with. For verses, I dove headlong into the pun pool. I was feeling so much self-imposed pressure to write something - anything - that keeping it light was good medicine. Might have to come back to this one during March Album Editing Month.

Perfect! Please go on with this!
@tseaver Feb 2022
Good write! Having the same advice come in from all sides is a great device.

This was both fun and thought provoking.
I love the structure of this - the short lines work so well.
Some fabulous lines too.

Love that chromatic walk up and down on the chorus. Clever puns and a GREAT vibe.
