Feb 2022 piano and voice firstfruits
"moon on snow" was partially inspired by a late night December walk in Birds Hill Park near Winnipeg, but also by local walks by the river and a long figurative winter season.
Another inspiration was the song "October," from the old U2 album of the same name.
The verse starting "you're the one who loves the winter" made the song both comforting and good for me.
moon on snow
winter, do you love yourself?
I have not learned to love you
any given winter day
I wish that you were over
naked trees, your only charm
'what once was,' a grave reminder
'what will be,' this old draft horse
plodding forward, wearing blinders
glassy brown of chilly water
ice in ripples on the river
hugs the curve of weary mountain
every drop a breathy shiver
you're the one who loves the winter
patience winding like a river
I walk behind you in the quiet
moon on snow, I feel you smiling
moon on snow
moon on snow
darkness glows
moon on snow

Lovely and atmospheric. I can feel that icy cold. Gorgeous singing and a beautifully descriptive lyric that places us right there alongside you as you walk in this frigid winter's night. Just beautiful!

This is Canadian winter driven song, no doubt..lol
Excellent imagery! I can see it all.
Well done fellow Canuck.

"winter, do you love yourself?" is such a strong, assertive opening, and I love knowing right away that the "you" is something elemental. Very pretty chord progression. And the old draft horse is a great visual that adds a lot of weight to the scene as we imagine it. Then winter takes over and defines itself. Really well constructed song.

Beautiful song. Your playing and singing are beautiful and hypnotic. Very imaginative and very nice to listen to.

Oh, so pretty. I feel this ambiguity about winter too, how beautiful it is, and yet how much it's not a hospitable place for me, how it's not really mine to love. And the music is just as lovely as the moon on new snow.

This came out beautifully.

Wow. Crying by line two, after not being sure I wanted the song to start, because the piano was so lovely...Thank you.

Third song I've listened to by you and all in completely different genres!
This is lovely. You've really captured the starkness of winter. Loads of great images in the lyrics. I especially "hugs the curve of weary mountain." So evocative!

Things you find when randomly searching. Just….WOW!

From @metalfoot recommendation and glad i did. Beautiful in its sparseness, great vocal effect against a simple but pretty piano.
@bradbrubaker Feb 2022
The resolute (if naive) old horse bounding forward was my favorite image.
@vivalarayna Feb 2022
Really beautiful start to FAWM. As one who loves the winter, I know I tend to be in the minority. You've captured the melancholy of the season with your lyrics and music. The end "moon on snow" overlaps really felt like I was standing on a moonlit bridge while the snow fell around me.

I love it when the muse hands you a little gem you weren't expecting. Stunning lyrics delivered so gently against the minimal piano instrumentation. This is just lovely.
@dukemeyer Feb 2022
Wow - the lyrics catch me from the very start! And the music is awesome and lovely done. This lets me dream - with a smile on my face and a tear in my eye. Touching harmony!

What a beautiful combination of piano and vocal -- a lovely flowing melody and the simple-sounding piano line flows along like the river underneath the patina of ice on the surface.

Lovely sound and sense of nature's wonder. Cool effects on the voice(s) for an "icy" effect. As a Wisconsin person am not too far away, and can certainly relate to your message.
