Feb 2022 melodic piano acoustic randomwikipedia
So here is the random wikipedia I got given:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abellaite
I took inspiration for the chorus and then the rest was a free for all. I decided to use the first exercise from the latest Jeff Tweedy book and wrote down verbs that I associated with work (because I was in the office) and then ten things that were in my field of vision and then meshed them together to what formed most of the verses.
It is fair to say this was a rush job, I knocked up the piano by using the diatonic chord progression trick learnt here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8eItITv8QA
The drums were just grab anything I can out of ezdrummer midi files, the bass was just to use the root notes and randomly picked rhythm in scaler.
I did, however, play the piano and acoustic guitar at least.
I made a few boo boos when putting it all together but just went, I'll let you see if you can spot them.
I'm met with coffee and a notepad
when I turn the other way
everybody else would think its foolish
but I do it time and time again
colourless to white
I relate
crystallised in mine
I relate
crumbled into parts
I relate
but you still caught my eye
Abelliate, Abelliate
let's discuss our construction site
pull up a chair with a cable tie
stress the importance of a watered plant
colourless to white
I relate
crystallised in mine
I relate
crumbled into parts
I relate
but you still caught my eye
Abelliate, Abelliate
sell a chair for a tree branch
struggling with hangers on a laptop
the floor in the flat below achieves a code
but I don't know, I don't know
colourless to white
I relate
crystallised in mine
I relate

Very nice groove and very nicely sung! The lyrics came out superb considering how they came about :) I love the slight craziness and the way they still make complete sense!
@sunnymae Feb 2022
This is fantastic! I love the breakout into the chorus. And these lines!!!
let's discuss our construction site
pull up a chair with a cable tie
stress the importance of a watered plant
I spent half my time in awe of and gigging somewhat with these lyrics and totally taken by the intensity of your performance as it is so dramatic. Wonderfully done!
@theawkwardsleep Feb 2022
This has a great vibe. Like the harmonies that add a bit of movement.
@bigmood Feb 2022
oof, great use of space. Just perfect how the beginning vocals and the piano leave enough room to feel the distance in between the notes, makes it extra effective when the driving piano comes in.
@elesimo Feb 2022
Ohhh, I love that intro. Great vocals, and I like how you explore the space between notes... it's something I've always found hard to do, and there was even a discussion in the forums about it back in January. Really lovely song, it's amazing what you did here!
@adforperu Feb 2022
Well you lucked out on that word, what a great word that is, if not the definition itself ha. Alas, you've done a great job on it. I've heard about this Tweedy method but no one actually told me what it is, nice! Really into "pull up a chair with a cable tie", great line. That simple piano line really anchors the song nicely, and an excellent vocal as always
@owl Feb 2022
The lyrics came out super intriguing and unusual, I really like them! The arrangement is lovely, simple rhythms but they fit together nicely. I’ll have to check out the video!
@roadreg Feb 2022
Thanks for breaking down your writing process - very interesting! Your vocals are strong and commandeering, and really drive the song. I especially enjoy the repeated "I relate" building up to "Abelliate", and the layered harmonic vocals. Good work!
@gordon Feb 2022
I like your delivery on this and I love the way you came up with the idea. Nicely put together and really works well. Thanks for posting
@aeye Feb 2022
I like how the feel changes as the song evolves. It starts off sparse and then the drums and backing vocals start to come in. And it continues to evolve. Excellent sounds! (sorry we reminded you the expanse is no more lol)
@frenchcricket Feb 2022
I do like the chorus too but I really appreciate the sparseness and lyricism of the verses: 'sell a chair for a tree branch' is inspired.
@robynmackenzie Feb 2022
Wonderful lyrics. Love that bass line. Things really kick up a notch when the drums come in and add a nice energy. Great listen, always enjoy your stuff.
@jorh Feb 2022
Really interesting to hear about your process to put the lyric together, I might have to try it! Enjoyed the short punch lines of the chorus contrasting with the denser, description packed verses. The piano is my fave too, so obvs that was a highlight
@kissinginpublic Feb 2022
Good job with a very difficult subject. Your vocals sound awesome and really nicely recorded too.
@henika Feb 2022
Love the build. The chorus really kicks in.
@thelowestbitter Feb 2022
As others have said, that chorus is very catchy, and you’ve got some great lyrics here using the Tweedy method. Particularly like “pull up a chair with a cable tie”. Off to a good start!
@paulh1237 Feb 2022
That chorus is a total hook, and I like how the second verse is sort of filled out and developed musically. Those backing aahs in the last bit really fill it out and make it sound huge. Great start.
@thedutchwidows Feb 2022
That first lift into "colourless to white" really grabs the attention. The whole thing works so well - really good melodically, the production is spot on, lyrically great. Not much to not like here!
@shortdan Feb 2022
This all works really well. Extra points for sticking with that Wiki entry you were given too!
The chorus is super catchy and the bouncy piano chords are really effective. Your vocal is a real highlight and unmistakably you - you've such a distinctive and recognisable style.
Top opener, nice work :)
@jdschramm Feb 2022
I think this is really successful. The chorus is great and the changes in pace work really well.
@philkmills Feb 2022
Great singing and knockout presentation of the chorus.
Music supports it all well.
@vomvorton Feb 2022
This is a great take on the random Wiki challenge, I think I'd have talked myself into having a second go on the old randomiser if I'd ended up with this one but you've made something rather lovely from it! The piano sounds really good, the lyric is intriguing and I can already tell the chorus is going to stick in my head.
@slusk Feb 2022
The lyrics. turned out... postmodern or something ;). Excellent tune and arrangement. Since you already own EZ Drummer why don't you shell out your hard-earned money for EZ Bass as well. Highly recommended.
@sorby69 Feb 2022
Love this Mike! You have a superb voice. The seemingly mundane detail in the lyrics really work well. I keep meaning to finish Tweedy's book. Not sure I got much further than the first couple of chapters.
