Feb 2022 rock homeless hard times
An old song but I've given it a little revamp. It gets me over the starting line.
Lyrics - Julie Day
Music and vocals - Billy Playle
Holes In My Life
There are holes in my life and I can’t say why
‘Coz lord knows I give and I sure do try
I give it my all, each and every day
With all that I have, in every way
Now I’ve never killed and I’ve never maimed
Yet I’m here in bad times, outside of the game
It’s like I’m in this world for others to blame
Somehow they believe I’m no longer the same
Holes in my life and I can’t say why
Yes there are holes in my life and I don’t know why
Yes there are holes in my life and the fingers point here
Right straight at my heart ‘coz I guess it’s too near
The thoughts that you carry they remind you of me
Easier to avoid than to really see
So these holes I live with they sure are yours too
Are driving us down roads we’d rather not do
Now I’m a survivor but sometimes it’s been close
And when I thought I’d leave I miss you the most
Holes in my life and I can’t say why
Yes there are holes in my life and I don’t know why
Yes you need to know in your world of dreams
Of the holes in my life and my torn up seams

Just wow! Powerful and passionate. Great sounds and great mix with an important message. Depressing and uplifting all at once. I'll be watching and looking forward to hearing more.

Both the lyrics, and the music you bring to them, are a convincing take on the perspective of someone who is down and out in the way so many people are -- just bad luck piling on bad luck in a society without enough help for when things go bad through no one's fault. The kind of puzzled exhaustion of just trying to keep on going, when anger would be appropriate but there isn't energy for that. You put that across to me with the heavy beat, as though every measure were almost too heavy to do over again -- I'm thinking of the tiredness in the walk of a man I saw recently, heading off into the woods where I know there are homeless encampments, little places hidden from view and it's going to be so cold tonight!
A most excellent song!

Wow! That snare has serious punch, I wasn't expecting that or the new identity the song seems to take on after the first smack.
Awesome solo and the arrangement is somehow full yet clear as day. Every instrument takes just the right amount of spotlight, and no more. I'd pay a lot of money to be able to compose and arrange like this. You are a serious talent, Billy.
I shouldn't neglect mentioning the song itself. Stellar work. The melodic pattern you establish early on is pleasant enough, but like the rest of the music, it goes up a notch when the band comes in and your let your voice really soar. You have some pipes! Sounds like you cut your teeth on 80s hair bands like I did.... Except you could actually keep up with them!
Stellar work.
