What About Me
Jeff Walker - FAWM 2022 #1
You just got off the phone
It’s clear that something’s wrong
Did he say, “Oh it’s not you--it’s me” again?
How many times is that
He’s got those lines down pat
Again you say you’re giving up on men
Here’s a tissue for your tears
Before your makeup smears
Sit with me and we’ll commiserate
You can tell me all about
That night you caught him out
With that other girl you now pity more than hate
CH
I’m floating this idea out
And hoping you don’t sink it
It’s one you’ll really go for
If you just don’t overthink it
When your heart needs a new trustee
What about me?
It might come as a surprise
I’ve been telling you white lies
When I said I only want us to be friends
That’s not what I ever felt
‘Cause when I’m with you I just melt
And dream of how I hope this story ends
CH
I’m floating this idea out
And hoping you don’t sink it
It’s one you’ll really go for
If you just don’t overthink it
When your heart needs a new trustee
What about me?
Now you’re looking at me different
A question in your eyes
And I try to find the courage to come clean
CH
I’m floating this idea out
And hoping you don’t sink it
It’s one you’ll really go for
If you just don’t overthink it
When your heart needs a new trustee
What about me?

So true ...just a great story. Chorus is catchy. You have a great timbre to your vocal for these type of story telling ballads....really nice to listen to. Great job.

Lol, just don't think about it- such a perfect anti-attractive sentiment. You perfectly capture the "friendzoned nice guy" perspective here, including the fantasy-land expectation that she might change her mind or in fact doesn't already know what he's thinking as he struggles to unnecessarily spell it out. Maybe it's just cynicism, but I say that look in her eyes which you so artfully left undefined is nothing other than pity.
Brutal efficiency conveying this scenario. Great writing!

This is fabulous. That chorus is wonderful, the lines going to the minor, great pause for emphasis and everything.
@mk2021 Feb 2022
I really enjoyed this. The lyrics glow very naturally with occasional little pearl of a couplet in there. It feels sincere and the stripped back guitar approach makes it intimate as well. Good work.
@andrea Feb 2022
This is super relatable. I think this happens more than one might imagine. The simplicity in the music and vocal adds a nice touch of sincerity. I enjoyed this so much!
@mikeskliar Feb 2022
This is really wonderful- that lyric is conversational and right to the point and feel so 'right'- and the music is perfect for this. Nicely done (and great singing as well!)
@apauls Feb 2022
Oof, the rhyme between "trustee" and "me" is clutch -- it's a great chorus. Also, the relationship between "floating" and "sinking" is great imagery. Great work.

@Jeff9 So glad you're here! This is a great song with that all-important element of emotional connection. Great vocal (as usual), nice melody, lyrics with just the right of cleverness, the whole works! Nice job, Jeff!
@jdschramm Feb 2022
Love your voice and lyrics. I enjoy how your rhymes work a little unexpectedly sometimes, like the last two lines of the chorus. Nice work!
@oswlek Feb 2022
This is great. The change of phrasing in the chorus is cool and it's easy to imagine the right arrangement really punctuating it. BeeBee could knock this out of the park, I think.
@mandolinda Feb 2022
Easy going, and easy listening. Very nice song.
@tukayandryan Feb 2022
Chorus is really catchy! When your heart needs a new trustee' is a corker of a line. Really lovely vocal and guitar.
Agree about @stephentanner - he is an incredible talent
@evinwolverton Feb 2022
"I’m floating this idea out / And hoping you don’t sink it" is a killer couplet to start a chorus with. Loving the asymmetrical meter that sticks the chorus landing, too. Great voice you've got.
@crisp1 Feb 2022
I read the lyrics first without listening and they're very sweet and very well put together. Probably most of us have been there once or twice, so we can all relate. Wonderful melody, vocals, and strumming. Nailed this one, Jeff!
@onewholovesrock Feb 2022
Excellent as always Jeff! Good stuff.
@cindyrella Feb 2022
Thanks for letting me know! This is brilliant in so many ways. Super job!
@williamhaight Feb 2022
You sold yourself short. A really top notch effort1
@cindyrella Feb 2022
Jeff! This is just wonderful! I so love the chorus and the trustee line! Can't wait to head it!
