They called me smart, called me gifted
can't start to say where it all shifted
in my heart, knew I was different
to dopamine, I was addicted
Now I lay in bed crying, trying to stop from dying
in my head, pretending I'm flying
because real life ain't hiding
and my mental health backsliding
At the top of my class, knew how to pass
no friends, sitting there no class
social standing a thing of the past
standing there worth no more than trash
when a gifted kid burns out
no way to know how it turns out
never loved when my brain learns doubt
but this is where my concerns shout
call me Fool's Gold, cuz this tool's old
bout to be twenty, when this fool folds
and ain't nothing but what's cool's told
brain only take what the cruel's sold
Ain't nothing but wasted potential
best in show but nothing essential
said I was special with a pencil
'stead I'm staring down a metal barrel
hiding in a pile of trash with no cash
keep pretending I'm bold and brash
but I get painted over in a flash
on to the next kid in a dash
I'm worth nothing to no one
can't concentrate, have no fun
stay in the dark, see no sun
not worthy till my ego's gone
yeah, I peaked early and often
like fallin' asleep in a coffin
a mile a minute, never stoppin'
even when others were rockin'
and it's cuz of the way my brain ticks
sitting here ain't got any sane tricks
unless gratification is instant
never know what inane thing sticks
Always tired, surprised I ain't fired
depressed whenever it's inquired
never really feeling inspired
this wasn't the ending I desired

After reading a few times I kept thinking that this was perhaps somewhat of a rap tune by the way certain lines ended and others pick up. Strong, descriptive words you use to form this narrative. Impressive.

Relatable and interesting subject matter. Lyrically, there is some good word, rhyming, imagery and storytelling. Musically, I see stanzas 2, 4 and others with internal rhyme in the first line being very different melodically. This can vary the pacing and you have even more reason not have a chorus. I find that some songs with a strong storytelling component don't always have a chorus.

These lyrics hit very close to home :')
