Feb 2022 alternative folk-rock fipple instrumental
Fipple - the mouthpiece of a recorder or similar wind instrument which is blown endwise, in which a thin channel cut through a block directs a stream of air against a sharp edge. The term has been applied to various parts of this, including the block and the channel.
Moeck maple Rottenburgh tenor recorder
Lowden O12 acoustic guitar - the cajon noises are me hitting the guitar as a percussion track.
Fender Precision Bass
VSTi piano (which sounds like a flanged guitar) and drums
Cheap condenser mic from eBay
@ahumburg Mar 2022
Great mix! Way to flex the cheap eBay condenser as well. Bravo man. Such a diverse array of instrument timbres and textures and yet everything fits so cohesively. You have a great pair of ears and sense of arrangement.
@lymonster Feb 2022
Great drums effect when they finally arrive in the song ! Interessant song progression
@mctown Feb 2022
Reminds me of Traffic... cool.
@yewnorker Feb 2022
Well, I wasn't expecting this! Perfect ending too. It's really very pleasant and uplifting.
@crutherford Feb 2022
oh Paul! i've been in a vortex of setting up my new studio. so happy to be able to sit down and listen to one of your songs! i love it. i've never hear the word fipple before. i thought it might be jabberwocky. turns out i'm wrong. what a great sound. full of joy! i love a good title - i'm a sucker for alliteration. fabulous first entry for this fawm!
@jaegerin Feb 2022
The recorder sounds so good! Your instrumentals are always so interesting to listen too - love the progression here and the ending is fun - as if the fipple fairy spotted a human and had to disappear sharpish.
@heliosonorous Feb 2022
Really nice, very joyful and uplifting!
@pvk2020 Feb 2022
Excellent and beautiful.
@ajna1960 Feb 2022
This is so sweet, and yet still has that slightly tougher folk-rock feel that the drums bring to it.
Very uplifting.
@phylo Feb 2022
This is so happy! The harmony bits are so lovely. The melody is so sweet.
@tunecat Feb 2022
Great recorder playing. Nice sweet tune.
@gm7 Feb 2022
You are certainly using those whistles to create a wonderful Celtic vibe to this song.
@musicsongwriter Feb 2022
It feels like a very different style to any compositions I heard from you. I always enjoy listening to your music but this piece is my favourite of yours.
@petemurphy Feb 2022
This is really lovely, Paul. The recorder sounds so good.
Gorgeous vibe and melody.
Ooooh, you have a Lowden. I have a friend who owns one, and I've used it on numerous studio sessions. They're fabulous instruments.
@jamkar Feb 2022
What a delight to my ears. So many wonderful sounds rolled into one!
@audrey Feb 2022
Lovely! Has a bit of a Celtic feel. Interesting ending. This one put a smile on my face. Such a gentle positive piece.
@musicbymichelle Feb 2022
Love the fipple sound!
@wobbiewobbit Feb 2022
wow that sounds like it takes a lot of puff. lovely sound though, and the guitar and percussive sounds noodle around it so nicely. lovely when it kicks in and opens out too.
@downburst Feb 2022
What a joyful tune. The acoustic licks under the middle section are lovely.
@dock Feb 2022
Lovely tune. The recorder sounds great! And you've got a solid backing of instruments without overwhelming the recorder! Very well done!
@kanttila Feb 2022
Nice whimsy tune, sounds great! Love all the sounds here, great melody. The drum entrance was awesome, I didn't expect it and it really made the track move along at the end.
@grenzgaengerin Feb 2022
I like this very much! Very soft and it sounds like a sunday stroll in the sun
@tretopcarter Feb 2022
Here I am in my local tavern, drinking a pint, throwing a coin to the bard in the corner
@zeekle1998 Feb 2022
Very nice, especially when all the instruments come in. I could see this in something like the Princess Bride style of movie.
@dukongp100 Feb 2022
I like how all the instruments are sounding together when used at the same time. That flanged vst is convincing as a guitar, it has an interesting sound. Liking the build up from.beginning to end
@spirulence Feb 2022
This reminds me, in a good way, of a brand song, like you would see Samsung commission as the pre-installed sound on a new phone. It's the right level of energy and hopefulness
@beat Feb 2022
Ja! Luv it when me ears are getting a first class massage...
@sheilerk Feb 2022
Oh yes, that’s what I’m talkin’ about!!! ;3
@outinpublicdrummer Feb 2022
I felt like someone was giving me a motivational speech through this. Very good energy! I like the guitar percussion
@gammafied Feb 2022
First impression is a gentle jam. I play D&D and I see this as our happy group of adventurers is relaxing in a tavern. The I like melody of the recorder and jamming guitar just ties everything together.
@singbiosis Feb 2022
I love the arrangement and the unusual instruments. Makin' the most o' what you've got! Not very often we hear a tenor recorder with the lead!
@bradbrubaker Feb 2022
Are you doing hammer-on two-handed harmonics on the guitar in the middle section? Well, whatever you're doing it sounds cool. In and out super-fast leaving the listener wanting more.
@carleybaer Feb 2022
In order to really appreciate my appreciation of this song, it should be noted that I just stumbled out of bed with barely enough wherewithal to make coffee before staggering over to FAWM and finding this. It was like an invitation to the morning! Optimistic and charming, like early sunlight shining through green leaves in a magic forest. By the time the drums kicked in, I was ready for the day. And the lack of resolution really seals the metaphor: this is only the beginning, what else is in store?? Better go find out...
@valeriecox Feb 2022
Oh this is so great! That piano does sound like a flanged guitar. :P But heck yeah, I love me some folk rock vibes. It easy on the ears but have great energy. Just made me feel good. Thanks!
@judypie Feb 2022
Fippling wonderful! I LOVE this shit, (and by shit I hope you know I mean, beautifully wondrous music that sounds like it’s coming from just over the hill from a village square in hobbiton). Stellar start!
@headfirstonly Feb 2022
The cuckoo clock interspersions made me laugh, and I'm still smiling now. You're definitely off and running with this one, but easing into things gently (a good idea at our age!) Very nice!
@cts Feb 2022
Well, well...you fulfilled your threat about using a recorder (big smile). This is a pleasant trip down a musical road. The mix is even and sounds great coming from a very old Mac Book Pro (2013, I think). Dynamic range and inspires a mental picture as well. Totally digging this!
@sapient Feb 2022
I came for some sweet DD tunes, and ended up learning a thing. Nice!
I love that it has that "BBC kids drama from the 70s in which very weird things are about to happen" vibe. But maybe that's just how I am conditioned to respond to the sound of a recorder...
@airbagtester Feb 2022
Really nice. I like how it starts strong, then comes down a bit at 0:44 for the middle part before the drums come in for the last part. Very dynamic song. Also great recorder chops!
@rayboneor Feb 2022
There's a real richness to that recorder, so warm, which is just lovely next to that crisp, percussive guitar. You never disappoint :)
@ductapeguy Feb 2022
Gorgeous. You got a beautiful tone out of that recorder.
@guatecoop Feb 2022
Wow, I really like this and I bet that it was fun to write and record. Very pleasant and your playing on the recorder is excellent! Your talents....goodness. Well done!
@intoyourlight Feb 2022
Wow this is beautiful :) Really like it.
@emkaydeebee Feb 2022
Love what you’ve done here! The way you bring it down dead chilled in the middle, then the harmonies. I’m inspired!
@richaaaay Feb 2022
Thoroughly enjoyable. The recorder sounded great and the balance of the other instrumentation was perfect. I enjoyed some of the tasteful subtleties appearing here and there with the acoustic guitar.
@kenmattsson Feb 2022
This is inspirational. I have a lot of wind instruments, but wasn't sure what to do with them. This brings lots of ideas to mind. Really solid start!
@timfatchen Feb 2022
I'm supposed to have gone to bed, but I saw #fipple and...the maple has a lovely voice. This is a startlingly amazing recorder performance, it goes remarkably well with the backing, and feels real (which synths never do of course.!) Kudos! Basset next, c'mon
@coolparadiso Feb 2022
very well done! I keep playing with my recorders but they never sound this good! Very nice first song!
@sph Feb 2022
Quality from the start! Nice warm sounds from both recorder and guitar and beautifully crafted dynamics.
@jackdawfactories Feb 2022
I've never heard a recorder sound so lovely! What a lovely piece this is, really joyful. This is the sort of thing I'd recommend submitting to a sync library!
@ayehahmur Feb 2022
First off this is a lovely melody. It's sweet and very naturalistic, and has a great hippyish seventies flow that really suits the recorder and guitar instrumentation. The recorder sound is beautiful, very woody and soulful and really nicely recorded. And overall I could imagine this very well as the music behind a TV segment showing people in the park in summer just generally enjoying themselves. There'd be sound effects of kids squealing and laughing, water splashing in a pond, a happy dog barking.
So, as you can see - really evocative! Brilliant start.
(And the flange on the guitar at the end just edges it towards the borders of prog territory - of which I'm very much in favour).
@mikeb Feb 2022
Well, now I must examine all my fipples!
Nice opening song for FAWM 2022. Assume you double-tracked the recorder. I had a friend in college who could play two at one time!
@brownium Feb 2022
That's a nice little bit. Quite relaxing with some bouncy little moments of excitement as well. I like the flanged (is that right) guitar that fills out the sound without intruding on the rest of whats going on.
@dreamscuba Feb 2022
This is a really lovely melody. That tenor recorder is ace... with a nice harmony... Great tune.
