A good first run at an ambient track
The sunset was lovely: regrettably the $5 video camera not so much: next time I'll have a decent recorder with me because the birds were great too. Al those reed warblers.
Wonderful ambient track. I think the $5 camera footage is actually pretty sweet and although it doesn't capture the true color and beauty of the sunset... it has a great vintage vibe to it and it works well for the song as more of an a lo-fi visual artsy backdrop. Relaxing, soothing and well executed. Great work.
Great ambient track and loved to see it set to video. I think there is something unique about your blend of the synth pads and the traditional orchestral sounds.
I love the synth-scape you've created. I am also a huge fan of bird calls (in music and in general) so I am imagining my own warbling and it's very peaceful.
The strings are somehow dramatic yet tranquil. I am a BIG fan of that minor9 chord at the two minute mark and the sequence that follows. Lovely progression.
I think it’s a very nice ambient piece. I don’t deny that having a good camera to capture the scene might be nice for your memories, but I think the hazy quality of the video works really well with the music and adds atmosphere… like shooting film intentionally for the grain etc…
very nice! it has the chillness of ambience, but enough darkness and tension that there's something very filmic about it-- I guess appropriate that it comes with accompanying video :)
Wow, soundtrack vibes! Really beautiful and I love the bird sound usage! Also, tremendous use of the vertical space from low to high right from the beginning, as someone below mentioned!
Usually the top part of the voice leading is what gets my attention in score pieces constructed like this, but here I really really enjoyed listening to where the bottom was, as it moved or even seemed to do its own "sunsets" being absent or eclipsed at intervals before reappearing. So this piece gave me a feeling of many days going by.
I actually like the video style, lovely tune very graceful. I forgot your in SA, looks like a nice yacht you have - my kind of sailing, peaceful / reflective. Always dreamt of a sail bot on the river with a studio, writing songs and taking nature on the water - all my favourite things, enjoy FAWM.
I love this, and ambient is one of the goals for this FAWM for me. Thanks for showing such a lovely example. Also thanks for your kind words on The Witness
I want to chime in agreement that the video quality actually does enhance the mood created. I get a collective sense of nostalgia and a "fourth wall" of detachment that I might not have gotten with the more refined videography a "nicer" camera may have provided with regards to contrast, sharpness, steadiness of focus, etc.
Bit of a surprise from you, compared to the style I normally hear you write, but your versatility really shows! You obviously have careful control of harmonic language, as you avoid making anything too sharp or direct here, so that it maintains its tranquility, but there is some beauty and darkness hiding in the lower voices. Bravo, Tim, great first fruits!
Actually, the five buck video is vibey and I like it! Song gave me lots of good feels, tension and sorrow in the sweetness. The kind of instrumental I would want to listen to over and over, @timfatchen !
Nice trickles of piano keys with up and down movement from the strings and synth . I feel relaxed listening to this, I get a good amount of anticipation
For my ears, the music told of "red sky in morning, sailors take warning" while the images said "red sky at night, sailor's delight." But that's probably just me.
That shift at 1:27-ish and the low note that comes in made it turned the whole track from ominous to grieving sadness. Well done.
Epic sounds as usual. Really makes you drift away. A great 3-4 minute escape. And with the video, it looks vintage. I like it. Heck, I’d even add some noise and artifacts and do some color adjusting, to make it more vintage looking.
The music and vid combined to give me a post-apocalyptic feeling. Or that someone has arrived on boat to a SEEMINGLY deserted island, kinda like Lost.
There's undeniable tension and something sinister in the music despite its gentleness - kinda like something bad on these islands despite their outer beauty.
You def accomplished an ambient track that made your listener feel and see something - that's a mark of a great track in my book.
(and like others said - the visuals from the 5 buck camera are perfect for this)
Tim, that's wonderful. The long, minimalist chords, the synth choices and the spare upper reg piano work really well together. There's movement and development, not much but just enough to keep the ear interested. Definitely falls square in with the ambient tracks I listen to a lot these days. Fab stuff.
Oh, and it might not have been whatyou were looking for but for me the low res of the camera really adds to the washed out feel of the musical ambience. I'd keep it!
Wow so evocative . So so beautiful and it takes me back to Thailand floating out to sea on my lilo being overwhelmed by the beauty and around me . Fantastic start
It really sounds like something is going to happen. Hopefully that something is a lot of songs for you! This is a great way to start FAWM! Nicely done.

Very cinematic ambient song, I like it :)
@williamjames Feb 2022
Very cool combination of visuals and ambient. Really relaxing listen.
@readwrite Feb 2022
Oh, gorgeous... the music and the beautiful anchorage... and a red sail on the gaff rigger. Would love to see her sailing.
I'd love to hear the reed warblers too! But this just in itself is a complete and lovely thing; really impressive for the tight time constraints.
@tukayandryan Feb 2022
This is beautifully tranquil. Can definitely hear this as a soundtrack. Lovely stuff.

This is lovely, great textures and space there. The song gives an ominous feeling to the sunset.
As for the camera, just tag the song with #vintage! :)
@melaniepegge Feb 2022
This is lush. So soothing. So much texture and depth. I actually love the lo-fi video.

very pretty, but also ominous. i was seeing the sunset in a western movie as the gunfighter rides out of town after killing his nemesis,
