one-mic drum sound — with an sm57!?

so i've read a lot about various one, two, three, and four mic drum recording setups. but usually with a one-mic setup you hear about a fancy condenser mic out front or overhead to capture the kit... this is the first time i've seen a single sm57 in the mix...

supposedly how they recorded the drums for amy winehouse's "rehab."

I tried this on one track this year:

Technically it was an SM-58. Worked much better than expected.

Yeah @burrsettles thats the guy from Daptone records….he’s amazing with his sounds and he says that he only ever uses up to 2 mics. 2” tape with Tube Tech stuff helps…hehe. I love his recordings of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, The Budos Band, Antibalas, and loads more. I do want to take some time to learn how to get the most out of the least possible, as I don’t do that now unless I’m recording for the cassette 4 tracks….awesome

They tried to make me add a room mic, but I said no, no, no

  • @helenseviltwin  Feb 2022

I saw @zecoop talking about having done this for a four track song.

  • @zecoop  Feb 2022

I've been using one Shure Beta57 in front of the drum kit for 4-track cassettes this year at about eye height when I am sitting in the drum throne. Just barely above the top of the toms. It has had a really punchy sound. Other years, I have used one SM58

Ah, the ol' crotch mic technique! (Well, for @zecoop maybe an eye mic?)

This FAWM I've been doing vocals + guitar with one SM57 and liking it. For a long time I wouldn't even have thought of trying it, because you're "supposed" to use a condenser in that situation, but it sounds just fine!

  • @zecoop  Feb 2022

@whispermouse - I've definitely seen the crotch mic technique and have Sylvia's book right here in the studio actually. :)

  • @whispermouse  Feb 2022

@zecoop I also have that book! I think she may use a slightly more crass word. I can't remember if it's in the book but it's definitely in her videos :D

  • @burrsettles  Feb 2022

    @chickenjail nice ;)

yeah, i've definitely miked a kit with a single mic before, but only a condenser. never tried a dynamic mic positioned like that. maybe i will!

  • @scottlake Feb 2022

You could use a 58, but hey whatever you choose, do so wisely. https://my-store-c73006.creator-spring.com/listing/choices-february-2022

  • @standup  Feb 2022

For 4-tracks lately I've been using a ribbon mic 2' away from either the snare side or the floor tom side.

I have omni dynamic mics, I should try the crotch thing sometime.

I was coming to mention the "crotch" mic placement. You just have to use maybe a little lighter touch on the toms than you normally would if doing a lot of heavy fills, but it works great for a good full sound if you're short on mics. I've seen it done that way for live medium sized venue setups for years if the drums just need a little oomph
