Hello again! This is my second FAWM!
I am a musician and music elementary teacher from Stratford Ontario! I put out my first album this winter, and you can find it at https://rachelhuitsing.com/ along with links for newsletters and other such exciting things. I perform fairly regularly at https://onlineconcertthing.com/, and hope to add a live show or two to the schedule this summer!
I'm trying an experiment this year. I have five categories that I am giving myself to work in for FAWM this year. In my head they are like EP's, but we will see how far they get. It's just a concept for my own inspiration.
Interior Crusades:
Songs that come from wrestling with the hard stuff. Depression, imposter syndrome, trauma, etc. If you aren't in a space to engage with these topics and you see my latest upload has been tagged with this label, please do not feel obligated to interact, even if you are Zong busting.
Piano Paintings:
I want to play more with my main instrument! She's been faithfully helping me sing with my voice, but I want to let her sing on her own this year. I'm guessing most of this will be one-take wonders of the improvisation kind.
Messin' with the Muse:
This is where I want to try to push my boundaries. I want to try new genres, give myself space and grace to fall flat on my face.
Spinning Yarns with Saga:
I love stories, but I don't know how good I am at storytelling songs, so here we go. In my head I'll be sitting on a southern front porch swappin' lies with a swamp granny to write for this category.
Rebreathed:
We all have those pesky little ideas that never became anything. I have lots of snippets of lyrics that I am going to try to go back to and see what I can make of them!

I get you on the classical training thing, it took me a looong time to realise how much I could actually change it (and I'm still far from exploring that in full confidence). It gives you such great technique but I never sounded anything like the music I actually wanted to listen to and sing. Changing and trying different stuff is such a fun journey though, I'm glad you're on it too!

I am never very sure of my higher range unless I’m belting, my years of second alto got me comfortable down in the cavernous depths hahaha thank you for being encouraging though! Maybe a higher song when I’m too far into the frantic writing to worry about it ;)
