Influences: Billy Bragg, Don McLean, John Doe, Johnny Cash, Nick Lowe, Cole Porter, Aimee Mann and Jason Isbell, John Prine, Richard Thompson
2021 was my first foray into FAWM-dom -- I loved the experience, wrote some songs I am really proud of, and can’t wait to do it again! (you can hear last year's output here: https://soundcloud.com/paparomeo/sets/fawm-songs-february-2021?si=afbf69a8afcc4f04b3517c811dc3851c&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing) I live outside Washington, DC, and would love to collaborate with others in the area and beyond. Been a bassist and guitarist since I was a teenager, but only really got serious about songwriting a few years ago after attending Steve Earle's songwriting camp (and subsequently Richard Thompson's Frets & Refrains). I'm a regular on the Social Distance Cafe's weekly online open mics (Join us! socialdistancecafe.com), and I'm looking forward to sharing my songs with live audiences again (soon, I hope!).
Here's my more pretentious "official" bio:
Springfield, Virginia, based singer-songwriter-bassist Pete Rafle is an alumnus of Steve Earle’s Camp Copperhead and Richard Thompson's Frets & Refrains, where he has had the privilege of honing his craft under the tutelage of Dar Williams, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Richard Thompson, and Sloane Wainwright.

Hi there,
just a note to say the music is finally up for my silly LOVE song.
https://fawm.org/songs/136376/
Thanks from me, too, for your comments on Curmudgeon's Farewell. You singled out precisely the lines I'm proudest of -- and that are the direct result of Jeff9 pushing me to do better. I recommend collaborating with him if you ever get the chance!
Pete, your kind words and encouragement about "Curmudgeon's Farewell" are a balm to my soul. That I could even for a brief moment make you think of Sturgill Simpson is wildly flattering. Thank you, sir.
Oh I'm so glad you got a chuckle out the the sausage song. I mean with a prompt like that, who can keep a straight face! Thanks for the listen.
Hey, Pete - I realized I hadn't posted the link for Fly Away Boy. It's there now, in case you want to compare it to the song you imagined when you read the lyrics: https://fawm.org/songs/134651/
Oh I really want to hear "The Ballad of Junior and Eddie" now. I'm mostly doing German, and although it's only a few minutes a day I do feel just that little bit more competent every time I visit. It's been a while though...
Thank you for listening to Paramount. She was actually the guitar that recorded songs 2-13 ... but she died in a violent mishap during the recording of song 13!
(Hopefully) I have another on order, I can't tell whether the model's discontinued, and I prefer it to the upgraded version. Shop thinks it can get it though...
She was the only mahogany fronted parlour guitar I have - and I found that records REALLY well. I actually didn't like her that much before she had to take over from my Martin (busted string) after song 1, She had a cracked and diy repaired soundboard from a previous accident a few years ago, and I didn't get on with the neck profile... but "you don't know what you got til it's gone"!!
Thank you so much for taking a listen to Don't Tell me a Story! I appreciate your insight immensely. I will revise over time to connect the sections more fluidly, but a good start I would say.
As for Kiss and Cry and comments about the show tuney kinda thing, I've been putting out more "Sondheimesque" pieces out myself lately and not sure what that all means either, except that I'm enjoying it! It brings out another aspect of my personality and with it, some other skills. So write away with your muses, friend and I'll do the same. Nice to meet you Pete. :0)
Glad you liked Sonya's brilliant take on my lyrics.
Thank you so much for the compliment on The Affair! Comments like yours are a huge motivator to keep going forward. Hope you get to learn German someday!
Thanks, Pete, for the encouragement on "Mean". Glad you got a laugh or two.
Thanks for your kind words on my song "Carry That Load". I like your songs- End of the World, Kiss & Cry, Take Away What Remains. Lyrics are good. You must write for musical theatre or perhaps, should.
Hi Pete. Yes, collaborations invited. Malc
Thanks for the listen / comment on my "Summoning Spring." As you requested, I've added the chord progression in place of the lyrics.
Thank you for commenting on the 10 x 10. Weird the way that one came to me!
Thanks for thoughtful comment, it's nice to hear that it got better on a repeat listen, that's sort of what I have been going for lately.
I'm sure the Frets & Refrains was epic, right? RT was guest speaker at a songwriting festival in Bath UK I was on in 2008 and I was uncharacteristically lucky and he happened to listen to and comment on a folk song I wrote that day -- he was polite and constructive and it was the biggest boost to my confidence ever!
I thought I’d hold off any comments until tomorrow or later but I feel I can’t procrastinate on this one. Thanks for your comments. I’m happy that you enjoyed Procrastination.
Thank you so much for your kind comment on Prom Queen!
Thanks for the kind comment on "Pants on Fire"! I'd love to take it to an open mic some day just to get people singing "Liar liar pants on fire" at me :).
Thank you so much for putting “Bonne Chance, Petit Avion” in the recommendation thread! I’m really glad you liked it :) and thanks for fixing my name too :)
Thank you yes…I think that ought to be the chorus…cheers!
Hi, Peter. It’s Matt G from F&R. Looking forward to hearing your songs. Happy FAWM!
Hi Peter -- thanks for posting this on Copperheads. Looking forward to hearing your songs.
Hey Peter. Looking forward to this.
Hey once the site unlocks I will create a placeholder song for our avatar collaboration and give you a shout and we can take it from there. Looking forward to it!
I enjoyed your mix on Soundcloud - look forward to hearing your songs this year!

Thanks for the welcome.
Looking forward to this.
hey West Springfield! have a great FAWM!
oh yes that's how we did it! i did remember that recently then forgot again, now i remember again. yes lets do that I would be happy to host, though there is a zoom that @yam655 runs, so first dibs to him
Hello fellow NoVa person!
I watchlisted you because you're local-ish (I'm in DC city), but I see your influences live in pretty much the same sphere as mine. I wouldn't have listed Don McLean or Cole Porter directly, but I'm 100 percent on the rest!
Do you have some stuff online I can check out? I'll be listening for sure once we get started here.

Welcome back! Have a wonderful sophomore FAWM!
