Influences: Far too many but a few are....Beatles, Clash, Brian Wilson, mozart, Debussey, Stone Roses, Carpenters, Arctic Monkeys, Depeche Mode, New Order, Shack, The Las, Status Quo, Burt Bacharach, The Kinks, Super Furry Animals, Drum and Bass, Synth pop, vocal harmonies and more melodic beautifilicious people and genres!!
Well Hello FAWM 2022
You catch me being completely indecisive this year. Once again instead of Asia exploring I am at home for the whole of FAWM.
I was contemplating not doing it this year as i have a whole lot of life decisions to make and as usual umpteen avenues of possiblities with uncertain outcomes in front of me but then...........
I made the decision this year to be totally collaboration based this year. I have written and released 3 albums this year and i wanted to give my FAWM a different focus and have so enjoyed collaborating, but in the past i've regretted not doing more so please hit me up with any sort of collab music wise.
* you may have lyrics for me to put music to
* you may have music but no lyrics or melody
*You may want me to sing on a song you've done or create harmonies
* i would also love to share little ideas which i'll happy let you run away and do whatever you want with.
Having said that i seem to have a compulsion in me to write music so i am more than likely going to end up with a couple of my own songs beaming their way to the FAWM family.
I will be listening my ass off of course, especially now i have infinite phone DATA so can't wait for my camper van trips to my music sessions with FAWM brilliance blasting out all month.
Here are the 3 albums i released this year for your pleasure folks. stripped bare is my first ever all acoustic album and the other two are full of rather a lot of variety but focusing a lot on lockdowns, freedom, and inner battles.

Thanks so much for your kind words on my songs. I'm more of a newbie (second year), so encouragement really is appreciated. This year I really tried to stretch and explore-skirmishes, challenges, and finally learning to use drum tracks, multi-tracks and effects. I even learned five guitar chords. Your stuff is wonderful and I will be coming back since I'm spending the month listening. Hey-question. Is Bakewell where they get the dessert the Bakewell tart from???
Checked out Leave You Singing This Song. Very Nice!
Thank you for your kind comments on The Coffee Gang. Kudos to you
for a siccessful FAWM year. Hope to be in this next year.
Alright then....Here I go on a listening session. I'm excited about this. Thanks again for your comments!
Thanks, Karl. I feel like we may have grown up with very similar influences (are you a child of the 80s/90s?). Loved discovering your stuff this year, we should collab next time round!!
thanks for your comments on chalk it up. a rough mix of the whole song can be heard here
https://billwhite.bandcamp.com/track/chalk-i-up
Your comments on Feature are most kiind. This was a last minute thing that evolved when we found that my son-in-law had dropped his cell phone in the toilet. The good news - rice dried it out and it came back to life.
Hey there! Hope you're still around! Sorry for the radio silence. Work jumped up and bit me just as FAWM was ending. You're one of my favorite artists that I discovered this year and I'm looking fwd to listening to more of your stuff over the coming days and weeks of post-fawm comment frenzy.
you won, congrats man! I can't seem to find the song titled "I miss you pad kra pow" though....
So much to catch up on here! I hope you’re planning to stick around for a the next week or so, as I plan to get in some listening here during that time.
Thx for your many supportive comments this year! I will get stuck into listening to a few more of yours very shortly.
Dear Karl,
I am so very grateful that you brought my Mad About You lyrics to life so brilliantly! So much energy and so well done! Your music is awesome and it is such a treat to have a song with you. It makes me smile! I look forward to hearing more of your FAWM songs over the next few weeks!
My dear Karl... As I already said it before this song is very special to me, and I am so grateful to you for all your time and efforts you invested in this gorgeous song despite all the time constraints and the requirements outside of FAWM. I really, really appreciate that a lot and I would like to thank you endlessly much for this wonderful and - as far as I am concerned - very personal song as well. I do not know how you always manage to do it, the melody is so beautiful, anthem-like but at the same time with the perfect touch of melancholy a song like this one was longing for... The soaring chorus is fabulous... And what a fantastic arrangement and vocal delivery! I am sooooooo happy how it turned out and I absolutely LOVE it! Thank you so much for this WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL song!
There is still one little thing I would like to ask you for if that is possible, of course... Could you, please, or make it downloadable or send me the mp3-file on my email address, which is
[email protected]
? I would love to keep it forever and listen to it any time... Thank you sooooooooo much again!
Cheers, Karl! Likewise, I’ll be dipping into the ones I missed over the next few weeks. Can’t wait :)
Wow....thanks for the very kind comments on When Will I Find Love Again? I truly appreciate your taking the time to offer such encouragement.
Hi Karl. Thanks so much for all your kind comments and support. You really have a knack for melodic songs and beautiful harmonies. Cheers! :)
Hey Karl! I am so happy to hear these extraordinarily great news! I am so excited! Sorry for replying belatedly (I was at work until now and had no chance to connect). I am very, VERY grateful to you for taking the time and the effort to make it come true despite all the time constraints and the stress you had (even if it may be kind of eustress as we love what we do, it is still stress). I would like you to know (as you probably do, anyway) that it is a very special song to me and I appreciate it a lot what you do. Looking sooooo forward to it...
And of course, I like the idea of me adding some lines notes about the background, too... :-)
Thank you so much and congrats on your FAWM win.
Hey Karlos, the situation on "Rendezvous " is a bit clearer now. I decided to focus on the instrumental around summer / autumn and decide later if and which kind of vocals this song will need. Thanks for your offer!
I really want to collab with you later the year or next FAWM. Right now my workload is too heavy to start a new song and I have no drafts that could sound well in your 60s stadium rock style. Let's stay in touch.
Great job on the stitching of My Home My Ireland. You might want to use the words at https://fawm.org/songs/134780/, as I had to adjust some of the lyrics that Cindy did originally so it would fit the music.
I have NO idea what I played, hahaha.... So definitely Blur. ;)
NEXT YEAR CAN WE collab? My fawm this year was shit. lol But I really would love to work on a song together. xo
Thank for your listen through on counting birds, it’s good to know that the song is working at some level. I have enjoyed listening to your posts throughout FAWM this year and love that your voice is never held back. It just sounds great.
Your comment on "Fit right in" means a lot to me, thanks :-) A meaningful song needs a splendid quality. My singing and piano playing is definately not good enough to do this song justice. I'm a waaaaay better producer so I'm looking forward to finish it :-)
You commented on @sherrycanary's defiant "Will of the Heart" https://fawm.org/songs/132639/ earlier (thank you). We now have Sherry's voice on it and a slightly better piano. Whilst there are some production issues which I can't fix at this stage, it's definitely an improvement over me singing it (!), if you'd like to listen again, or download the fresher version.
I can sing high if that's okay by you. I'm assuming the bottom is "male" voices.
I wrote a Paul Simon pastiche you might like https://fawm.org/songs/135394/
Thank you!! I definitely had it easy going first! Took a few attempts to line up perfectly with phrasing, but worth it to get the right end result. Thanks for looking after the end product for us all!
Hey Karl, I sent my harmony part via wetransfer as I sent you the wav, so it's a big file. May be in your junk mail however! The term stitcher comes from all the corpses, I just used it here in lieu of the words Chief Mixer Genius!
Thank you so much for the kind words about my music. So thoughtful, and I appreciate it. :)
Hey, thanks a lot for your comment on "Rendezvous" it means a lot to me. I'm not sure about the song status right now, cause I have two requests running. Hopefully I get that sorted this week. I'll keep you posted. In any case let's stay in touch concerning a collab end of the year or next FAWM cause I love your rocking. I have top much on the plate to start a co-write in the next weeks.
HI, and thanks for the conversation about writing music down! For the piano piece, I wanted to play it instead of sequence it, so that was the only way to know the decisions I had made about exactly what to play: by writing it down. If I had longer to practice I could learn it into memory, or if I could play it better without the practice I could record more directly. In more developed songs, I do a lot of writing straight into Pro Tools. But if I am singing, especially on a track produced by someone else and I want to do harmonies, again writing it down may ensure I get to the point of being able to record it sooner, without memorizing all my decisions. Cheers!
Wow, these are excellent news! I am so excited and looking very, very forward to it! :-)
The chord is x30030 (Cadd2 or some such). I like using it once in a while for texture. Thanks for the kind words!
Thanks for your comments on "At Your Command" it's definitely one of my favorite tracks I've gotten to collab on!
Hey Karl, that sounds interesting. Shoot me a draft when it's ready and I'll check it out.
Will you picked out the perfect banjo loop and if you could play that's exactly what you would have done. :0)
Isn't the universe of sample sounds and Loops unbelievable?
Hi Karl, I've been messing around with the music you sent to me. Would you be cool with me adding some lyrics / spoken word to it? I had a quick idea while I was working on it today.
Wow, your comment on "At your command" means a lot to me. Honestly. the weird time signature and everything just happened. I think that @chrismyth02 and I were mutually inspired. Cause I have no idea how I could pull that off intentionally.
"PS - if anyone wants to take the beginning or end of tune and create a different song am happy to send files"
- yes please, that would be awesome!
Thanks so much for the listen and comments on 'The Perfect Take'!
Karlos thank you so much for your more than kind comments on Never Surprise Me my collab with Donna. It's such a joy working with her and I'm so glad you enjoyed it! So glad you decided to come out to play with us again! :0)
Thank you for the very kind words of encouragement in "Home"!
Aces.. looking forward to it ;)
Hey! Just checking in, seeing how things are going... Still up for that collab if you fancy it :)
Cheers for the lovely comment on mine and Jeff's song!
Thanks for the comment on my collab with Tams 'We Don't Have a Clue'!
So glad you found it! I think my computer is good now!! Installed the new graphics card yesterday. So far, so good!
Ooh well tell the Irish fella to make it 1pm Saturday afternoon instead and I will join you both :p
Omg, I’m one of the 12 tabs of Karlsberg? Well I am honoured :D I don’t use your unique tab system, I just use the bloody built-in watchlist here on Fawm :p
Haha sounds like a plan! I’ve just ended the day on a meditation. Might be ready to perform again tomorrow woooop!
Lollll just read about your 1990 on your comments on ads song! And seen you have another three songs up!! ALRIGHT LAD, gimme chance!!
Goodness Karl, you are really killing it—not that you don’t normally. You do, but there seems to be a more focused thing going on this year…an urgency or something. Duly noted and admired!
Got 'em, thanks. I'll get to messin' as soon as I can. Got my mom staying for the next couple of days, so music making time might be a bit limited. Looking forward to digging in.
Haha, no worries. Great, thanks Karl.
Ace! Cheers Karl. Just downloaded them. Could you let me know the tempo you recorded to, please.
Also, there's a click track running all the way through every file.
Hiya Karl. Yeah, feel free to send anything.
You also asked a question some days ago about creating melodies before or after writing the words, but I'm so all over the place that I hadn't gotten around to replying....
I have no set way of doing things. I haven't really got a clue what I'm doing most of the time. Sometimes the words come first, sometimes a melody comes first, sometimes a lyric will instantly imply a melody other times it takes a bit of work to find the melody. Sometimes I'll have a melody and putting the words in will be like doing a jigsaw puzzle where I'll be slotting words in as I find them.
So yeah, that's probably not very helpful.
Most of my songs begin with me literally dropping my fingers onto the piano keys in a random fashion (and often without looking), and wherever they end up usually forms the basis of the song. Sometimes I'll start with a drum loop, other times not.
Did you get my email?? Videocard arrived today so hopefully I'll be up and running soon!
Thank you for the kind comment and the watch. You name-checked Kula Shaker so I've instantly reciprocated (I'll check out some of your tunes shortly too). What a great band! I still sometimes stick on Hey Dude, crank the volume up, and rock out (in a sad old dad kind of way). Cheers!
A DOUBLE COMMENT! Thanks for listening, glad you liked it :)
Thanks so much for your lovely comment on “Westbound Highway”!
Hey I am also trying to go big on collaborations this year, drop me a message if you are interested in working together on something.
Well appreciated the comment on "How are you". I'm glad you enjoyed. Right now we're working on lyrics and phrasing. Maybe this song gets a new version during FAWM. Who knows?
Hey Karlos! Glad to know there's another Harrison looming among the FAWM hallways. Who knows, we could be related...I apparently have some way-back connections to Harrisons in England but I don't have the details. Anyway, thanks so much for your very kind comments on our "No No" song! It was fun being trusted with Kristi's lyrics to try to come up with music. I'll check out your stuff and see if there's something that might lead to us collaborating, too.
Thank you once more mate!
I normally use Addictive Drums 2. The drums I use on "Cold War" and "It Starts Again" is the Modern and Massive set from Getgood Drums, though I use mostly MIDI drum loops from AD2 as a starting point, which is a bit of a pain because of the different mapping. But they do really smack.
Hey, I've been a bit stuck but did finish one lyric. It may not be to your taste but have a look. More coming but might be a few days. https://fawm.org/songs/129664/
Hey Karlos, thank you so much for the kind words about my boat name song "Freedom".
Hello!!! I'm honored you thought of me! I'll message you my email and I can give it a listen. I'm hoping I can get my computer up and running this week if the part arrives on schedule.
Thanks Karlos for your kind words on I Fall in Love Too Fast. Doug's lyrics were really easy to put into music. Have a Fab Fawm.
Hey Karl ! Please drop me an email and we will see what we can do for the song "No More Idols". Have a nice day ;)
It's brand new to me mate!! I have no idea what I am doing, haha. Most of the tapes I made won't actually play in the 4-track. I am finding the few that do, and obviously they don't run well, but that's part of the charm. And holy crap, I have missed on your songs!! I'll fix that soon. :)
Hey! Yes, of course, no problem... It is already done... :-)
Hiya Karl, thanks for the lovely comments. I've been a bit slow to respond to messages and such, and I haven't found my way to your songs yet, but I will.
I think you asked a few days ago about the piano in using, and whether it's 'played' or not.
I've got numerous piano vsti's, but I pretty much always end up using Pianoteq. It's my favourite. As far as the playing, I'm a shite piano player, so it's always part played and then heavily edited to make it sound like I know what I'm doing. I can hear all the notes and chords on my head, but I usually can't play it to any decent standard, so I end up drawing in a lot of the notes / velocities.
Hope you're ok.
By the way, I have already added you as collaborator, but, please, feel free to re-post the demo, if you prefer...
Wow, Karl, these are wonderful news! I am absolutely excited! ...and yes, of course, of course, you can alter any part of the lyrics any way you like... :-)
Thanks for the listen and comments on my rock opera song!
Aces!
I am working on several lyrics simultaneously and will send you a couple soon, to see if you are interested in musicating them. One is a Black Sabbathy expression of pure Id, though a little raunchy. The others my usual bag of images & ideas... If your dance card is full, that's fine, of course. Cheers
Your comments on Hero & Leander are meaningful and appreciated, thank you. I've learned to use more of the chords in the key than 1-4-5 and to try chords out of the key, for effect and transition. The song's intro & interludes are meant to suggest the lapping of waves; in a full production I might add polyrhythm handclaps, as well; plus toms and a sea bell for the storm. And maybe seagull cries?
Words cannot tell how happy and excited I am... and the honour is definitely mine, my friend...
Hey Karl, @arthurrossi sent me here. I was told that you want to suggest some changes to the arrangement of the song? Feel free to suggest anything. And if it suits you, we can even have a brainstorming session over Zoom using Ableton, so I can show you the project and you can suggest any changes you want. :) Let me know.
Karl, thank you very much for having taken the time. I absolutely *LOVE* music and - playing a bit piano - I have some rudimentary knowledge about it, but it is definitely not sufficient to participate productively in the creation of the musical part. I wrote @dantalion to contact you regarding the musical aspects, and maybe we can find a way...
Apart from that, I still have another concern, but I do not want to overstrain you and I can understand and, of course, it is totally ok with me if you reject it. It is so to say also a bit kind of a personal issue. My mum is born in former Yugoslavia, which does not exist any more. And despite the tragic events in the 90-ies and the wars and the horrible situation today, I associate very positive things with that country, given the fact I was spending some of the most beautiful and happy days of my childhood there such a long time ago, and, although I was physically not involved, of course, I do not exaggerate when I say in those wars a part of me died, too, for a life-time, leaving me longing for something that is gone forever. Years ago I posted a set of lyrics titled "Yugoslavia" and I still remember you left a wonderful comment and said you were intrigued to put it to music, but it would probably not work because of lack of time. Now I re-worked it, basically keeping the chorus, but editing the verses and the lines, changing some parts and shortening the lines to make it "more singable". If you like and if you have the possibility, I would be happy if you checked it out, the title is still the same, the link is:
https://fawm.org/songs/126334/
Please, let me know what you think. I would be too happy if, one day, it would become a real song, however, as I already mentioned, I can absolutely understand if you reject it and it is totally ok...
Once again, thanks a lot for taking the time,
Arthur
I still have to learn it. I suppressed songwriting for nearly 10 months cause I was so busy with producing my album... I planned to take a pause for at least days next week. Let's see if it works...
Same here. My muse is running wild and I dunno how to stop her. Too much noise in my head, too much interaction. Hope this will settle soon.
That would be awesome!!!
Hey Karl! We made some progress in regards of "One-way-street". @dantalion has uploaded a lovely musical part, which you can give a listen to if you like...
https://fawm.org/songs/125522/
I guess there will be still some work concerning it, but if you consider it worth giving it a try, you can tell us your ideas or contact @dantalion directly...
Thanks a lot,
greetings,
Arthur
Thank you for listening
And that’s putting it politely!!
Yeah Finally its FAWM, Happy FAWM mate
That sounds like a fine way to get going!
If you record to a click then I can add to it / chop it up etc. If you prefer not to use a click then I'm more likely to take it as an idea and build around it. Would that work?
If you want to take the conversation out of fawm, or send me files and stuff, you can reach me at abomnium at gmail dot com.
I'm looking forward to it! :D
Hey, sorry, but I'm still confused. I thought you start by sending me a nearly finished idea. I mess it up, send it back to you and we play ping pong until we have a song. All I need for this is bpm, keys and chords would be fine. Sometimes I also create a song around an existing vocal track, but it's important to me that everything is on constant bpm, because I got a VERY bad timing to play along.
Dan here:
Thanks for your lovely comments. My setup is relatively cheap so it’s nice to hear I’m getting a good production sound. To answer your question, I’m using a Mac with GarageBand at the moment as I don’t need Pro Logic for the stuff we’re doing. I like how it limits me. I’m using an M-Audio Air 192/6 for my audio interface and I have a RODE NT2000 which I use for all recording as it’s a great all rounder mic.
I love my little setup :-)
" I like the idea of one person sending a chord structure for a verse for example or a chorus or riff or whatever, throwing it to the other person maybe even throwing it back and seeing what comes out. . What do you reckon???"
- sounds great! There's a couple of chord progressions I was twiddling with recently. Fancy seeing if they inspire your muse for another magical musical journey? As always, feel free to decline - they can always be used somewhere else :)
Would love it if you want to fire over something of yours too?
Cheers!
Hey thanks for the comment! Great to hear the van is still going strong :) I am actually releasing an album of stuff soon so I’ll let you know when it’s out… It would be good to know if it passes the van test :D
Glad you liked Running, get those windows open on the van and I might even hear you playing it
soundcloud downloads: you have to move off the front upload (or the edit) screen two tabs in to "Permissions". And then you have to tick "Allow direct downloads' which by default is always off. (I had to poke into mine to remind myself. I knew it was something like that, buried in the additional pages, but just where...). Otherwise all anyone gets is the stream.
Hey Karl! @dantalion was so kind to be willing to create a melody for one set of my lyrics titled "One-way-street"(the tune does not exist yet), however, we are still in the search of someone who would be willing to lend his voice to the song, so I thought you might eventually be interested (of course, only if you like)...
If you like to check out the lyrics, the link is:
https://fawm.org/songs/125522/
Please, let me know what you think... and thanks for taking the time...
Greetings, Arthur
Karlos! How fortunate I am to be connected to you, thanks so much for reaching out and listening! Coincidence - also an indecisive year for me, also in the midst of a whole bunch of life decisions, but I admire your focus and ability to at least get clear with your bullet points. My only bullet point is to get through today :-) Have a great FAWM!!
Yo yo yo Karl! That's one extra yo. Have a great one.
