Update March 1, 2022
I had two specific goals coming in (see below) and I achieved both.

My musical plan was to use loops from the "Abstract Beats" sample pack as a basis for tunes. For better or worse, 29 of 30 tunes were done that way with mostly decent result. The lone outlyer was a 50's retro track "Slow Dance".

My other need was to become familiar with Reaper to which I switched from Cakewalk/Sonar in November but couldn't really dig into it until January. At the beginning of FAWM I couldn't get through a project without much looking up of how to do stuff. By now it's been a while since I looked anything up. Repetition and good online help works.

My unexpected discovery was that I and a number of commentors like the sound of acoustic guitar with otherwise electronic background. I'm definitely gonna run with that.

All in all a successful FAWM. Now I have a bunch of tracks to clean up or dump.

See y'all next time.

January 2022
Hello again my friends,

FAWM #8 for me. I have loved each and every one of them. Sometimes I have a plan. Once in a while I actually follow it. So here's this year's plan. We'll know about the following part in a week or two!

I came across a sample pack called "Abstract Beats" by Code Sounds. They are 4 bar drum/percussion/noise bits that are a little beyond the usual stuff while still maintaining a 4/4 time signature. A preview of the pack is available here:
https://soundcloud.com/codesoundstudio/code-sounds-abstract-beats-sample-pack-preview

The plan is to use them as starting points for my tracks. I've been dreaming up a process that should facilitate using the loops and their parts. Making it all even more interesting (to me at least) is that after twenty or so years I am moving from Cakewalk/Sonar to Reaper as my DAW. It's very new to me but I'm working hard to have at least a reasonable handle on it by Feb 1. Reaper is the same basic archetecture as Cakewalk so it's not like I have to turn my brain inside out like I would with Abelton and some others. Still I can do so many more things and many of the same things easier so I think it's well worth the trouble.

We'll see how it goes. If you have time to listen, I hope you enjoy.

I'm a he/him

I'm always open to constructive criticism so don't hold back.

Have some fun,
JW

Thank you so much for your comments on my song, A Series of Highly Unfortunate Events (which is my FAWM version of the dog ate my homework). I really enjoyed writing it and I'm glad it made you laugh!

  • @nadine Mar 2022

Hey, thanks a lot for listening to "Inner Demon". Haha, I was very angry when I recorded this but I felt better right after. The topic for that skirmish has been excellent.

  • @kenmattsson  Feb 2022

Thanks for your comments on my Messages of Fate skirmish. I think you're right on the pre-chorus on my song. I never think of pre-choruses, so I never label it as such, but the more I think about it you're right! Appreciate your listening!

  • @sunfire Feb 2022

I must have read it wrong. My bad. There was a soundcloud link located with your linear notes, that I thought was yours too. Here it is below.

Sorry it’s taken so long to answer the question re an app I used ( and screen recorded) ‘Figure’ it’s called. I’ve also used ‘Beatwave’ and ‘ThumbJam’ this FAWM

  • @ajna1960  Feb 2022

'You Suck Me In' has been musicated ! https://fawm.org/songs/134302/

  • @wylddandelyon Feb 2022

It may be a quirk of my brain, but I almost always find that combining more than one prompt leads to a better story or song than using just one. It's like there's a synergy happening, a tension or love story between them that helps the words flow.

  • @coolparadiso  Feb 2022

    well played!

  • @thedutchwidows  Feb 2022

Thanks for the comment on my skirmish song. To answer your question about using a 4-track instead of Logic - a really good question that occurs to me about 1/2 way through every recording! I did it to force myself to work with limitations - I found I was getting too distracted with all the plug-ins and constantly fiddling with every tiny element. I wanted to simplify everything, just to see what would happen! I've found I've enjoyed the process a lot more, even if the outputs are not as polished sounding.

  • @sunfire Feb 2022

Thanks for commenting on Cupid Slayer. : )

  • @jayjay  Feb 2022

Thank you for commenting on my little Valentine’s ditty. Much appreciated :)

  • @whispermouse  Feb 2022

Thanks for listening to "Valentine, Nebraska." Interestingly, I've been having good luck using a single 57 to capture vocals and guitar in one take, a thing I'd never tried, mostly because I always see people using condensers in that situation.

  • @sunnymae  Feb 2022

    Hey JW
So glad you got sucked into my Daytime Dreamer tune! I really value your feedback and glad you dug it!

  • @tunecat  Feb 2022

Thanks for commenting on my track. Good in you for using the word ‘neophyte’. I will look that up later. The track is made on the free app ‘figure’ and the sounds are presets but with a certain amount of tweaking possible

  • @hmstreetteam  Feb 2022

Thank you for your kind comments on “Something About Anna” and several of my songs. The encouragement helps me know when I’m on the right track. Keep rocking!

  • @acousticmaddie  Feb 2022

Hey mate YES have an awesome FAWM

  • @squeakmouse73 Feb 2022

You're awesome, sir. I've been working my butt off on a project with a deadline, so I haven't been on here, but I think it's time I do something for me. So, yes, I plan to do some fawming this weekend.

  • @odilongreen  Feb 2022

Thanks for the welcome a few days ago, and I hope you have a terrific FAWM as well!

  • @sheilerk  Feb 2022

Thank you for your listen and comments to my baggage skirmish song :)
I think I was probably as attached to my things as anyone could be. Still am to some. But, in moving to a different country, I quickly learned that most of that stuff didn’t really matter, and I didn’t miss it once I was here, so I was able to pare down considerably. My kids are already thanking me for what they won’t have to go through down the road! ;)
