Post-FAWM note: You all rock! I'll be making a point to listen and comment to all folks who were kind enough to provide their thoughts on my songs, if I haven't already. And then I'm going to try to have listening skirmishes each day to try to hear all the amazing music you all made. Keep being awesome!

*** I love collaborations! Please comment below and email if you'd like to get connected. ***

I'm a singer/songwriter living and performing in Minneapolis. My primary instrument is guitar and I'm fortunate to play in a local band and collaborate with other local musicians to write, record, and produce original music.

I've had a FAWM account since 2013 but have ended up skipping many years due to another time-consuming passion: filmmaking. This year, I'm committing to trying to work each of my guitars into a song. I have enough that I won't have to repeat so that will be an extra fun personal challenge.

I'm going to do my best to do some light journaling and express intention behind my songs as I post them, calling out the backstory or influences as they come. I think that's really interesting to hear from other people and these are sometimes so ephemeral that I'd like it, too. I'll post the same lyrics for each song exactly as I sang them so you can admire (optional) my wit.

I mentioned in one of my songs that I'm using a lot of different gear this year, and that's partly due to having stuff that was really great for rehearsals and playing live things that are currently impacted. But it gives me the chance to experiment and grow!

So, gear nerd alert, leave now if you don't care about that, but....

As I mentioned above, I'll be using a different guitar for each song. And I'm going to share a picture of each one on each song as I go through, a mention of what it is and any story behind it, as well.

Obviously, some songs may need different guitars for different parts, but go with me here, okay? Each guitar will go into a Hughes and Kettner Tube Meister Deluxe 20 into a Two Notes Torpedo Captor X with an HK Box cabinet.

Bass is real, a Geddy Lee Fender Jazz bass (pictured below) through the return of the HK amp and using the Marco cab simulator in Torpedo. Drum loops are from Addictive Drums, with some minor tweaks by me here and there. They are the Fairfax collection, using Tama Starclassic drums. Funnily enough, I was going through the kits and was, like "oooh, that one sounds really good," and, upon realizing what it was, thought "of course I like that". It's the same kit that one of my former bandmates played and it sounded killer.

Vocals are sung by me through an Oktava MK-319 into a Scarlett 8i8. A picture of my mini-studio is below.

Any additional effects will generally be using the built-in plugins in my Presonus Studio One DAW. I'll lovingly* mix and export and upload from there.

*sometimes it's not so lovingly, especially as I'm trying to fix a few minor things before uploading only to just say eff it and upload it anyway so I can try to get some sleep and recover creative energy.

You're all beautiful! Keep making music!

I'm trying to get caught up on my listening. Thank you for being so supportive of my creations this February!

  • @nadine Mar 2022

I just noticed we have twin avatars. We could have entered the #twinsies challenge. Naaah :D

  • @nadine Mar 2022

What an awesome title of a song! Don't forget to use pixel fonts. This is a game changer!
    Speaking of long song titles...
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/At_the_Soundless_Dawn
Damn I hated typing these into my music library!!!

What can I do to improve my timing? Even playing with metronome I speed up my playing and get out of sync. And when I notice that the 80 BPM are 110 it's too late. I have this issue on piano and guitar both which is why my playing sucks!

I'm looking forward to work with you on "Diplomacy". This will rock! I started a forum topic to find the missing roles. We can start once I know if we get a drummer and the perfect key for your vocals

I'm glad to have found you. Guess we share the same twisted sense of humour and geekyness

  • @vivalarayna Feb 2022

Thank you for your comments on Social Ladder! Yes, everyone's playing "beat the buzzer", but I expect there will be a spike in commenting this week (before everyone disappears until 50/90). I know I'll be making the listening rounds. Congrats on making 15!

  • @nadine Feb 2022

Thanks that's well appreciated! I guess I'd have a great time in your guitar museum :D Haha I'd be so lucky if I could do one takes like some folks here. But it seems like arrangement and production is my strong suit.

  • @nadine Feb 2022

As long as you can keep track and enjoy its okay to have so much gear. I don't even have one electric guitar! But I will buy one as soon as I have more space.

  • @berni1954  Feb 2022

    RE: The EPIC!

OK John. I have channelled my inner Meatloaf on this one and have a version ready. Do you want me to post it? Or do you want to approve it first?

  • @kahlo2013  Feb 2022

Sent you something to chew on via email.

  • @kahlo2013  Feb 2022

    Perfect! Thanks!

  • @kahlo2013  Feb 2022

Hi John! We are paired for the random collaboration! I will write some new lyrics today for you for this challenge. Please let me know if there is a particular theme and/or genre you want me to write for - or that you want me to avoid.

  • @lmr  Feb 2022

    John,
Hey this is Lucas from the 4 Channel video challenge. That was fun! Just sending you some files through we transfer now. My knowledge of recording and video is very, very basic. I don't know how to do anything fancy in terms of adding effects or electronic instruments. Hope this is okay. Thanks!

  • @nadine Feb 2022

You're welcome! I hope you're still able to record cause bubble wrap is so tempting... *plop* *plop plop*

  • @kahlo2013  Feb 2022

Hi John, I LOVE Lake Superior and spend many summers along the lake, writing many 50/90 Lake Superior songs. I would be fine with a couple of versions of My Late Winter Heart if the other musician @ltunes who also generously offered her gift of music doesn’t mind. Usually the versions are so different they sound like completely different songs.

  • @nadine Feb 2022

You're welcome! I just missed your name and songs in my feed. Life can be pretty busy, so I hope you're well! I had to take a break for 4 days, then my muse just ranted and created really complex songs. I decided to stop writing, because I already reached the 14 and still have collabs running. The morph challenge is the only thing I really wanna try, but I have no idea if it will reache me. If I continue writing songs I won't be able to produce them this year.

Good luck on reaching your 14!

  • @nadine Feb 2022

Hey! How is your FAWM going?

  • @br0th3rh00d Feb 2022

Hi! Kit Pip worth/Kathy Bramley here!

  • @metalfoot  Feb 2022

Looks like we're up for Random Collab round three! hit me up with some lyrics and we'll see how it goes!

  • @scubed  Feb 2022

Thanks so much for your kind words!

  • @bachelorb  Feb 2022

Thanks John.... should be coming your way soon. I’ll let you know when I send it out.

  • @bachelorb  Feb 2022

Hey John, is a .mov file (iPhone video) ok to send you for the video challenge?

  • @lastnightilie Feb 2022

Sorry just properly read your comment about Frank Turner. Yeah, I love him, he's my absolute favorite! And I've been lucky to see him loads of times, and hopefully a bunch of times this year :) Maybe that's how I've been able to emulate him haha. But thank you for the compliment!

  • @nadine Feb 2022

Thanks for your comment on "Rendez-Vous". I've created the arrangement in 3/4 but yes, the verse is thoughout 6/8 but I have a missing beat in the chorus. The Bm chord after the A is a bit too early and everything is shifted. I couldn't solve this riddle last year and now I kind of like it. My head is bursting writing down this super weird chord sheet!

  • @caitlin Feb 2022

Hey, thanks for coming by and sharing the joy on 15,022 Days. I’m so glad you did because now I am loving getting to discover your songs!

  • @pauloramos Feb 2022

Hey, thanks for your comment on my song, really kind of you to listen. Hope FAWM is going well for you :)

  • @brisk Feb 2022

Ooh, ooh! I have both Fairfax sets! They sounded great, I'm going to use that one on my next song I can shoehorn them in to. Thanks!

  • @vivalarayna Feb 2022

Thanks for you comments on Mixed Messages AND for recognizing that your perspective on the topic is not of primary importance. I wish others had taken that approach.

  • @jamesstaubes  Feb 2022

I appreciate your heartfelt and funny comments on my tunes. You are so cool and what makes FAWM such a wonderful place.

  • @elainedimasi  Feb 2022

Edit: Ha, I just checked the story with my friends and they said:

"The Wharton student story was even stranger. She picked up coupons for take your professor to lunch week, and then went out to eat with her friends not including a professor. It was that which sparked the investigation into her application, and uncovered her falsification there."
    ---
Hey, thanks for the comment on what (allegedly) went down at Wharton Business School! In fact it's an old story that was told to me by two friends who were professors there at the time - I've forgotten how many years ago - her falsified transcript might have gone undiscovered if she hadn't been caught with an almost meaninglessly small plagiarism thing iirc. Did it make the news, or was it hushed up properly? An internet search tool is the only way to find out!

  • @vivalarayna Feb 2022

Just sent you an email re: right to reply collab. May be in the spam folder if you don't see it. :)

  • @nadine Feb 2022

Haha, yes, I'd but one of their shirts. There cannot be enough umlauts! Cheers.

  • @ggallagher  Feb 2022

OMG your screenshot on the too many tabs thread was too funny! Thanks for listening to both songs I’m having so much fun with these songs this year !

  • @unpronounceable  Feb 2022

Damn, what a lovely soundboard note. Nice to meet you and looking forward to checking out your stuff.

  • @jorgevallentine Feb 2022

Hi John! Thanks for your comment on "It's Love, It's Always Love". For me, dynamics and emotional vocals are always key components of what I want in my music, so I appreciate that you mention those. A full band version would definitely be fun for this! Thanks for listening!

  • @darcistrutt  Feb 2022

I’m glad my cowbell brought a smile. I haven’t seen the new Doctor Who so that was a happy accident. Now I want to watch it. :-)

  • @nadine Feb 2022

Ok, I've sent a mail! The soundboard is nice for chit-chatting but definately not the place to leave important information!

  • @nadine Feb 2022

I'm glad I've seen your comment, cause I don't receive a notification when somebody mentions my name outside the forums.
Lol your attempt on Dorian Gray is heavy and grumpy death metal. I didn't expect this! But I like the spoken words approach.

Thanks for your offer on collaborating! We should talk about this via mail, cause it's too lengthy to explain ok?

  • @mahtowin  Feb 2022

Thanks so much for your kind and emotional comment! :-)

  • @jlampson  Feb 2022

@nadine - I uncovered my roughly 20-year-old super sloppy version of The Portrait of Dorian Gray and uploaded it here for us to both admire and ridicule. What a fun subject, and great to meet you!

    https://files.fawmers.org/FAWM_2022/jlampson/13%20The%20Portrait%20of%20Dorian%20Gray.mp3

  • @nadine Feb 2022

Yay, I'm not the only one who thinks that this book is worth some metal music! Today, I checked some other Dorian Gray songs and most of them are not heavy enough for this wicked character. I'm curious to listen to your interpretation.

Well, I use FAWM for songwriting and arrangement. I'm obviously not good in instrumental playing (all programmed) and singing (massive autotune), so I hope I find some people who are way better than me to take my songs to the next level. I'm sure this will be a banging track with the right crew.

  • @mikegtz  Feb 2022

Welcome back to the FAWM show and good to meet you here.

  • @jlampson  Feb 2022

@hoppiern - that's weird. I tried it in incognito mode on my computer and it worked, but I'm going to blame Jeff Bezos on this one. With any luck it's a temporary setback and doesn't keep anyone from listening to people's stuff. Okay, bed time for me now - I have to rest up for Day Two!

  • @hoppiern  Feb 2022

Hi - thanks so much for your kind feedback on my song - I want to listen to yours, but for some reason, I can't get them to download or play! Is it me? It usually is when it comes to tech. Hope I can hear them soon!

  • @darcistrutt  Feb 2022

Thanks for visiting my song! Hope you have a great FAWM!

  • @ericdistad  Jan 2022

Hey John! Woot! Good to see you back man. (and sorry for the slowness in my reply!)

Yes, lets get some collaboration going! I'm very much down for it!
