I reckon the irish you heard is trying to maintain an Australian accent in a very american alt-rock melody.
Aus accent shares a lot with Irish I assume (Based on history)
Hey - thanks for your comment on Sign of the Times - the guitar tone is an NI guitar rig preset called "Dreamy clean picking", but basically combination of compressor, chorus, delay and reverb through a jazz amp. It kind of came out a bit "Twin Peaks" in the tone, I think!
