Artist Bio

Influences:   Björk, Dead can Dance, Nine inch nails, Porcupine Tree, Gazpacho, Anathema, Kelly Lee Owens, Chelsea Wolfe, Emma Ruth Rundle, Elliot Smith, Fever Ray, Thom Yorke, Opeth, Tim Bowness, The Tea Party, Tori Amos, … I also listen to classical music and Norwegian black metal, but just when I‘m in the mood.

Hello there, my name is Jil, have been on this planet for 31 years now, in my space suit which is a female body. ;)
This is my first fawm ever. I am writing songs on and off for a few years now, rarely finishing ideas. So this is my challange to myself.

I’m kind of a jack of all trades and a master of none. I play the guitar, e-guitar and since last year I am deep diving into (mostly analogue) synthesizers and tape recordings. The instrument I probably mastered the most is my own voice, as I‘m taking classical singing lessons for a few years now.

I‘m hoping to connect to fellow fawmers, learn a lot about making music and about myself and - most of all- to have a great time :)

I came in awfully late. Granted @frogspawn doesn't start FAWM till March, but he's a parody/satirist anyway. It just shows how big FAWM actually is that I hadn't come across any of your stuff until reading today's forums. Only listened to two so far but...wow. Hope you come in for 50/90. i tend to be a bit intermittent because of other calls on me but I'll try. [EDIT and I've just found I missed your comment on One Way Street...normally I'd respond with a reciprocal listen but missed this time. So serves me right for having to wait so long. But I got here in the end]

  • @wolfkier Mar 2022

I do my best work at arse o'clock.
This one will have different rules.
Although there will be a time restriction maximum, we'll find a perfect time when you can do yours. :)

  • @wolfkier Mar 2022

    ....

  • @wolfkier Mar 2022

    :)

  • @katestantonsings  Mar 2022

I hope we can connect during 50/90, Jil! You rock. Great work this FAWM!

  • @nancycunning  Mar 2022

Thanks so much. I do love Rilke, and of course I would love to have you turn some of my lyrics into your amazing songs. Thanks so much. 50/90 or next FAWM is great, or you can always email me if you need some lyrics in the meantime ;)

  • @wolfkier Mar 2022

Save the rest for email. But see if you can't think of and find a real world kinda general example to attach.

  • @wolfkier Mar 2022

Excellent! Just in case. Thank you.
In the mean time perhaps scribble down a few quick notes about what this proposed "collab" might entail. No promises whatsoever, but I'm curious.

  • @wolfkier Mar 2022

Just checking, should circumstances require that you do your bit of the GIMME15tit4tat a little sooner, would you be ready for action, my friend?

  • @wolfkier Mar 2022

    1) Thanks very much for the kind words.
    2) We can discuss such a matter via email between the time you send me your section of the GIMME15 and the commencement of 5090, madam!
    3) I'll be back to repay your kindness later. Looking forward to it.
    4) and just for goood measure here's another :)

  • @ferry0123 Mar 2022

Hey.. :) same to you. Got it. Thanks!

  • @wolfkier Mar 2022

    1) Lots of smiling. so here's another.
    2) Good, it'll help me mix this monster. which could easily get out of hand.
    3) You can write 10 songs all summer, I just wanted to make sure you knew about it. Some first time FAWMers don't realize it exists and miss out on developing frieindships they made here. Don't forget to make contact with me there. https://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/user/wolf-kier
    4) ooooh, that's a secret... But I wish you as many happy years, as many amazing musical moments, as many dear friends, and as much fun as I've had during my time with these challenge.

  • @wolfkier Mar 2022

    1) :)
    2) Please take a moment to download the kick track, for continuity in the corpse. https://soundcloud.com/wolf-kier/608-x1a-kick-track-gimme15tit4tat
    3) my question about 5090.
    4) Thank YOU....

  • @wolfkier Mar 2022

Thank you for your espcially kind words. Indeed we can #tit4tat happily into the sweet forever. It will be my pleasure, I'm sure..
Firstly, I see now that this is your first FAWM. Please accept a hearty welcome from me and congratulations on reaching the goal.
I sincerely hope you will join us for 5090 in july. Ask me if you don't know what that is.
In the mean time, please consider joining a few of us in this music game > https://fawm.org/forums/topic/12954/
Again, if you have any questions about the game before commiting, feel free to ask.
I'll be back to continue our #tit4tat shortly. :)

  • @nadine Mar 2022

I'm trying to recover from heavy FAWMing. I'm done... wish I had some holidays...

  • @nadine Mar 2022

Welcome back, hope you had a lovely holiday!

  • @katestantonsings  Feb 2022

Huge Fever Ray and The Knife fan...still wondering when new music will come out :) Watchlisted you for next year!!

  • @adforperu  Feb 2022

Well done for hitting 14 at your first FAWM! I'm glad I found your music, it's excellent.. see you around in 12 months..?

  • @nadine Feb 2022

You're welcome! Can I envy you for your holidays? I want to have some so badly! Have fun listening to songs. I'm done with your profile but I'll so tit4tat. Let's stay in touch after FAWM :)

  • @nadine Feb 2022

Congrats on hitting the 14 in your first year! You wrote very strong songs and I enjoyed my listen :)

  • @nagavaeoe  Feb 2022

Yes, congrats to you too! It's a huge accomplishment. At 15 I'm checked out and in listen mode. I have no time or energy left. :O) For me, and I think many others as well, the hardest part is getting things done and sharing work in an imperfect state. I tend to spend a lot of time perfecting things compositionally and production-wise. This year. I just went for it. Still did a good amount of production, because for me it's part of the composition. But post-Fawm is when the real work begins. To refine everything. Time to release full length album. I'm following you on SoundCloud. Let me know if you'd like collab on anything at anytime. Best of luck!

  • @nadine Feb 2022

Wow, you already made it. 1 to go! go go go gooo!

  • @dzdandcunfsd  Feb 2022

You've been busy! My listening has tapered off dramatically while trying to finish things. I'll have to come catch back up. I'm intrigued by this three parter!

  • @howthenightcame Feb 2022

if you want to try for a more coherent album, that's cool. however, if you put songs together carefully - however different their styles - they start to take on their own coherence, through association.

i like your different styles, no need to downplay them or separate them out!!

  • @nadine Feb 2022

I struggle the same. Some weeks ago I worked on a minimalistic pop sing but I ended up with 20 tracks. Oops! I was not able to cook it down to 4-5 like a real band would play it. Guess I have to do a 4 track cassette challenge next year. But without cassettes lol

  • @dzdandcunfsd  Feb 2022

I understand. I would never have to patience to program drums, not that I'm more than a passable at best if nothing else will do drummer in the first place, but at least I can get it done fast. :D

  • @farmyardorchestra Feb 2022

Hello & danke schön for your kind feedback on Cyanide Spring! I am currently fighting to read Schiller ins Deutsch, have been watching a Fritz Lang movie (Nibelungen) and have, of course, not been able to avoid listening to Beethoven, so it feels nice and kind of familiar to receive another communication from our big neighbor in the south. :-)

  • @nadine Feb 2022

    Not official but: https://fawm.org/forums/topic/12695/

  • @wrenarcher  Feb 2022

Hey Jil thanks for the compliment on my guitar playing for “a Valentine Maybe”. Something odd has happened this year with recording setup… I’m not having to fight it to get it to play nice. Not sure why but I give it head pats every time i sit in front of it now just to keep the good mojo going. :D

Seriously though, it helps so much and now I can focus on my playing and the lyric writing. Which, by the way, thank you for the kind words about the lyric lines on that song. Believe it or not… That was a skirmish song! Can’t believe it turned out as well as it did for something written in just under an hour. Thanks again. Muah!

  • @nadine Feb 2022

Same here. I usually have my best ideas in the middle of the night. Or when I'm not able to write them down. I'm happy that you nailed your anti valentine song. There's a challenge fir it I guess?

  • @nadine Feb 2022

I'm happy you enjoyed "Pedal to metal". It's been a fun and quick write. Wish I could rock heavier but my voice just reached the limits. I can't pull that off and hope that this project will happen.

You're right, I cannot trust my muse, my genre and styles are completely random since I started to FAWM. But its not easy to switch genres. I'd approach a heavy rock lyric differently than a ballad, instrumentation is completely different every time. But I already figured out that I'm not able to write genre with massive sounddesign or vast arrangements e.g. ambient, space rock, singer-songwriting. I try to open myself up for blues but I don't feel funk and reggae. Everything mid-tempo between pop, rock, metal, electro is fine.

  • @gorban  Feb 2022

I got a PRS Custom 24. I wanted one for a whole and then there was a rather good deal on the second-hand market and I just got the yearly bonus so it was good timing. It sounds surprisingly “classic rock in that song there, in general I find it to be a bit on the more modern side. Well, at least the 80ies sound.

  • @judypie  Feb 2022

    Hahaha you know it!

  • @judypie  Feb 2022

Haha yes, at the end when I was FINALLY edging towards the door, we had the awkward conversation of ‘shall I see you next week then?’

Oh lolll, you should’ve heard the excuses tumble out of my mouth

  • @judypie  Feb 2022

Haha I know right! The first 30 minutes of the ‘lesson’ I was sat down at a small table in the kitchen, that had only one chair. She brought out a folder of all her certificates and placed it on the table infront of me and then leafed through it showing me every single certificate she’s earned from her 25 year educational history in her home country of Russia. She showed me both the Russian original and the English translation. And then would cross reference them to the THIRD copy that she had framed and put up on the wall that was infront of me.
THIRTY MINUTES WE DID THIS FOR. It was all just so overblown, that the madness of the lesson that followed was just even more mental!

  • @nadine Feb 2022

It's been the last song I listened yesterday. I'm still lacking of inspiration and waiting for collabs / challenge stems...

  • @judypie  Feb 2022

Hahaha well I don’t know about *everywhere*
Like nursery/kindergarten probably should skip it :p

  • @iwilleatyou Feb 2022

Yeah same here. Using a desk while writing songs is like eating pizza with your feet.

  • @iwilleatyou Feb 2022

Thanks for the compliments!. BTW love your setup. It's a replica of mine only way neater and with more cool toys. I do it all on the floor, no chairs, desks etc. And everything is old and broken too! It's a miracle I get anything done.

  • @chroes  Feb 2022

Hello, thanks for visitin! I'm glad I stumbled upon your profile, your music is incredible and inspiring. Looking forward to listening to what you come up with next!

  • @berni1954  Feb 2022

Thanks for such a positive review of my "Gretel & Hansel" - It was a fun write.

  • @nadine Feb 2022

Thanks! I hope a collab can solve this knot in my head... My muse is enjoying melancholic ballads, blues and agressive metal this year. Weird combination...

  • @nadine Feb 2022

    Du hast Post.

  • @nadine Feb 2022

Ouch! I decided to take lessons right at the beginning to avoid wrong posture, pain and bad habits. I wanna learn e-guitar, too, but I lack of space.

  • @nadine Feb 2022

Thanks a lot for your kind words on "She's contemplating". The song is just the opposite of what I usually do (singing, guitar playing, sparse arrangement vs. composition on piano, production, dense arrangements). Its been a challenge for me! Im not happy with my performance, guess I'll need 5 years of practise. I've started to learn barrel chords. It hurts! Thanks fir encouraging me. Whenever I feel good enough for recording, I'll buy microphones. But I need some space first...

  • @complexissimple Feb 2022

I just realized that the e-mail address on my profile was the wrong one. Can you send your corpse segment again?

  • @nadine Feb 2022

Thank you so much! I never learned how to growl properly. Some months ago, I unintentionally figured out how to close my vocal cords and love the sound when I start to whisper like this. I know how to get into the fry register but when I try to mix my voice, it's gone or I sound like a dying pig :-( Looks like it is hard to learn.

  • @nadine Feb 2022

Hey, thanks for your comment! Haha, yes, maybe that's a sign that we both have to declutter our deepest inside. Oh yes, I think your voice would suit "Dust" perfectly. Please send me a mail with "Dust" in the subject, and we talk about details. In German of course ;-)

  • @bandybum Feb 2022

    https://fawm.org/songs/125348/
"Thank you!!! Was the perfect song for me today :) love the lyrics, so uplifting and energetic, the whole song"

    - Thank you so much for saying that, it is greatly appreciated :)

And welcome to the fabulous FAWM family (highly addictive - you've been warned!)

  • @jmso91  Feb 2022

Thanks for your comment on my song :) I really appreciate it. Yeah I think the biggest lesson I will take from FAWM is to trust the process and try not to be too hard on myself. x

  • @dragondreams  Feb 2022

If you click on the envelope icon on my profile page, that will give you my email address. :-)

  • @dragondreams  Feb 2022

    Okay... weirdo corpse time.
I've given you around 20 seconds from the end of my piece, because it has a long reverb tail.
When you complete your part, please send the whole thing to me, and the last ten seconds or so to @complexissimple.
Here's a link to my bit.
    https://www.dragondreams.org.uk/fawm2022/weirdo/Dragondreams_HereBeDragonsSection1Last10.mp3

    Have fun. ;-)

  • @dzdandcunfsd  Feb 2022

Thanks! You should come join us https://fawm.org/forums/topic/12409/ there then.

The general idea seems complicated, but its simpler than it seems. You'll get 10ish seconds from the end of someones roughly 1minute of music. Then you do a minute based on that and send the last 10ish seconds to the next person in line. One person gets all the full segments and stitches them all together. Its made for some very interesting things in the past :)

This one will have no pesky rules like bpm, or key, or any of that boring stuff LOL.

  • @nadine Feb 2022

Danke für den Kommentar! So grandiosen Blödsinn kann man nur hier machen. Nutz die Chance! Die Zusammenarbeit hat echt Spaß gemacht.
