Artist Bio

Influences:   Too many to list, mostly red-dirt grungy psychedelic noise rock though I suppose

So I guess this will be year 11 since I joined this site. My takeaway........this place has ruined my songwriting skills how can I ever dwell incessantly over words/phrases/syllables/notes/noises and that "perfect" recording for months/years or decades ever again.

My deepest sympathies to those that still do.

he/him/it/hey you whatever works, I've probably been called worse.

I prefer his excellency ;) but no one seems to be on board with that

(just kidding about the last one)

PSA: Everything will be mixed in and for headphones(mostly because I'm lazy), but will be toying with a lot of low frequencies. So use a subwoofer and listen at your own risk. I'm not responsible for blown speakers, or any loosening of bowels.

Happy Birthday!!! What would Cody’s bash sound like versus Bertha’s? Bandit would be there! Cherry schnapps? Cumpleaños feliz?! Anyway—hope your day is great!

  • @fuzzy  Apr 2022

I used to confuse my bandmates; the guitarist would be playing straight-up 4/4 and I'd suddenly and without warning kick into 5 beats to his 4 and then the (inexperienced) bass player would just stop playing in confusion. I think they need to listen to more prog rock. :)

  • @fuzzy  Apr 2022

    Ah, polyrhythms.
    I love em so much.
I used to do composed pieces with lots of different time sigs all playing at the same time (I think my record is five at once), but these days I don't have the patience to put all that together.

  • @fuzzy  Apr 2022

    Hey, thanx for that.
I'll give it a listen soon!!

  • @nadine Apr 2022

Thank you :) I'm still gathering information.

  • @nadine Apr 2022

Thanks got explaining the polyrhythm! I'm still puzzled but I dont wanted to blast the topic.
Let's assume something written in 4/4, I can fill the beat with 12 8th triplets. If I clap on every 4th its an even division. Does this qualify as poly or not?
When I clap on every 8th the rhythm is more offset but I meet at the end of each bar. What here?

Of course I do whatever I like and sounds right but I wanna learn the right terms.

  • @berni1954  Mar 2022

Thanks for the comments. Your B.I.L. was lucky to get out of Bornu when he did. It became a hotbed of Boko Haram activity, especially in the noughties. Yes, we were in Nigeria during the War of Biafran Independence (or The Nigerian Civil War if you prefer). It was a horrendous time. Though we were far from the front line, we lived on a Medical Compound and the lorries full of wounded from the front would deposit their contents on the soil of the compound. A guy would go around kicking the bodies. Any that reacted would be taken off for treatment, any that didn't would be loaded back on the lorries for disposal. :-(

  • @katestantonsings  Mar 2022

Bandit is a bad ass dog. Spoil him now…

  • @berni1954  Mar 2022

Sorry my Nigerian Prince nearly killed you. :-) But if he really wanted you dead he'd have hired a contract killer. They're unbelievably cheap in Lagos, where we lived from 1959 to 1973.

  • @musicsongwriter Mar 2022

    Thank you.

  • @elainedimasi  Mar 2022

I appreciate your note! The cheerleading helps! Don't worry I will drop some of those cowboy chords into our 50/90 FAWMlab like logs for mushrooms
    :-D

  • @toms  Mar 2022

Did shutting the door on it improve playability? :D

  • @ferry0123 Mar 2022

Good idea to start with a cheap mic!

  • @ferry0123 Mar 2022

20 tries...a lot of work, but hey, if only one of them is okay, it will have been worth the effort.

I suppose you'd be in for swinging a mic for a swirly effect when recording vocals/guitars. If I'm correct, John Lennon suggested that once. Talking about it...sounds like a cool and dynamic experiment.

  • @ferry0123 Mar 2022

Thanks for replying to your song :) I really like what the finding out process did; it's my experience that while things are new and exploring-like, unexpected good things happen creatively. And when by accident you happen to have pressed the record button..that only adds to the 'yeah!'-feeling. For some reason a redo oftentimes doesn't bring the same magic- I don't know whether that's true though - I like to think so! Anyway, keep on bringing the noise.

Thanks for visiting my songs. Until next stop!

  • @toms  Mar 2022

Also - THE EXACT SAME GUITAR???? That is completely freaky.

  • @toms  Mar 2022

Why in the world did anyone ever think that those pickups actually sound good? I got the guitar into playable shape and used it on exactly one song.

  • @wolfkier Mar 2022

slothcore and GIMME15 would be strange bedfellows BTW.

  • @wolfkier Mar 2022

oh, then suddenly we are 4....

  • @wolfkier Mar 2022

    We live, we learn.
We die, we don't have to put up with that living/learning crap any more.
    Leave it with me....

  • @wolfkier Mar 2022

And then there were 3... leave it with me...
ever experimented with the age old funeral dirge? Asking in passing... no real exact connection to what I'm cooking up at all whatsoever.

  • @wolfkier Mar 2022

if there was just one more GIMME15 would you play again? asking for a friend.

  • @toms  Mar 2022

About 5 years ago I found this in a local pawn shop for 50 bucks. Almost the same model as my first guitar (which got destroyed in a fire) although that one had only one pickup. So, yeah, I bought it. Barely playable. Funny, when I brought it home my wife was like "that is so beautiful" - something she never said about any of my other guitars. :D

  • @chinacat  Mar 2022

I left Philly in '93, sounds like The Teeth was after my time. Can't believe I didn't discover Ween until I was living on the West Coast in the late 90s. The local bands I remember that I really loved were Baby Flamehead, King Carcass, The Wishniaks, Abandon Earth, IMU (took guitar lessons from their guitarist, Peter Wilf), Fjord Rangers, Sweet Pussy, and plenty of others that have escaped my aging brain.

  • @chinacat  Mar 2022

Thanks for the listens and comments!

Dean used to play in another Philly band called Baby Flamehead, they were my favorite band to run sound for in the early 90s.

I think the last time I saw The Dead Milkmen was them opening for the Red Hot Chilli Peppers at UPenn in 1990. I was working local crew for the show, the Chilli Peppers set ended after like 3 songs because the crowd was ripping up the chairs and throwing them at the stage :)

  • @davidtaro  Mar 2022

Thanks for the kind comments man - it pains me that my 7 year-old is already writing better lyrics than I'll ever manage :D

  • @davidtaro  Mar 2022

Hey dude. I think I’m after you in the Wolfkier stitching fun show. My email’s [email protected]… for when the time comes :)

  • @wolfkier Mar 2022

ok, love that much is now love that much, thanks for the heads up!
And the kind words :) GIMME15tit4tat should start rolling within the next hour.

  • @ryako  Mar 2022

Awww, thanks for the kind words. Yes, the Netflix thing was Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. I really enjoyed that format, so I felt like it would be something unique for FAWM. I love storytelling and I also like the challenge of making stuff up on the fly.

  • @guitarpatz83 Mar 2022

Thanks so much for the comments and for listening!

Okay so I have a confession with that outro. I’ve got a host of great pedals that cover most bases but… in this case, I’d recorded that arpeggio part pretty clean, and then layered it with various logic X pedalboard patches. So there’s a ring mod one toward the end, lots of fuzz and phase earlier on in the outro. I hadn’t quite decided where I was going with it when I put the guitar down originally but the Logic X pedal emulators are actually pretty convincing!

  • @angelinapowersuit Mar 2022

Wow that’s amazing, a pitch-perfect dog! Hard to find even a pitch-perfect human! You should take him on the road!

  • @nadine Mar 2022

Cody, your comment on "She's Contemplating" made my day. Sounds like a love and appreciation letter to @wacha. She has a very distinct style and it was fun to analyse and try something out of my comfort zone (= epic heavy full band arrangements vs. sparse arrangement singer-songwriting). I'm happy that Catherine enjoyed my take and turn it into a real good song later the year.

  • @angelinapowersuit Mar 2022

Belated thank you for your comments on, "The Ring." Oooohs are such easy filler when I can't think of anything else to say ;-)

  • @moonraccoon  Mar 2022

Hahaha! That alien language is a code for translation of music from my brain to yours, if your instrument is compatible ;) Thank you for your awesome comment on More Than Cheese.

  • @franniezest  Mar 2022

Thanks for checking out robot song! “I’m” a human friendly robot. Inspired by the book Scythe where the Cloud is a computer that helps humanity live on earth in harmony. :)

  • @momentegalerie Mar 2022

Hi there, thank you soooo much on my first comment on my tune Molly Bloom (haha, rhymes!). I appreciate your lovely words!

  • @chroes  Mar 2022

Hello there! Thank you for your helpful comment on "We're going down". I think you're right, the drums have more to give here, be it panning or maybe a different kind of dynamic manipulation. I need to take a close listen later and find ways to incorporate that. Thank you again!

  • @gardeningangel1  Mar 2022

I am very excited and a little scared to hear the ammo can/cajon/lapsteel.

  • @heliosonorous Mar 2022

Thanks for all your listens this year as well!

  • @kahlo2013  Mar 2022

Hey! Just want to say thanks for the random collab and the Cujo song! Truly appreciate your creativity, your comments, and working with you. Liz

  • @katestantonsings  Mar 2022

Thanks Cody! I haven't really experimented much in that register. I nearly threw up when I posted that song--I was worried what I heard in my head wasn't what others heard with their ears. LOL, so a heartfelt thank you on the kind feedback! I'll seriously reconsider doing something more with that one...

  • @candle  Mar 2022

Yeah you beat the pants off me this yeat ;->

    See You In The Shadows…

p.s. I have some listening catching-up to do it looks like LOL

  • @unpronounceable  Mar 2022

Thanks so much for your comments and for spending some time with that song. Yeah, it was the day after I wrote it, I'm in a training and it just dawned on me: Organ. I took my lunch break and quick and dirty added it. Always appreciate you. Jesus, it was a productive FAWM for you. Happy March, friend :)

  • @wolfkier Feb 2022

    :)

  • @coolparadiso  Feb 2022

I had a good friend over in NZ when he was 16 he got to work as the go to boy for the roadies on the Who’s NZ tour. On the day of the first gig. They said take this letter (promising to pay);to the local music shop and get a spare lead guitar for Pete. So he went in, they said which one, he said well i thought townsend was a star and great so he said the dearest , he thought about $1500 thats 50 years ago. That night he was backstage and as they played the last song Townsend swapped his guitar for the new one went on stage and smashed it to pieces. Ha ha. My mate said he thought he was gonna get fired but it was never mentioned! Next gig he bought the cheapest he could find! Ha ha

  • @ferry0123 Feb 2022

I started working with your tracks this afternoon. Yeah, it's really cool and challenging to pick the best parts. Quirky, funny, cool bits. There were lots of them and the ones I did like less, I cut them or put the volume down or halfway. Also, panning was never as cool. The fact that it exists: a sound going from your right to your left ear or vice versa. I experienced that as if I did it for the first time in my life!

Thanks again for your work. It's been a joy!

  • @elesimo  Feb 2022

Thank you so much for your comment on my song "I'm not a good person", it means a lot!

So, the band "Umbrella Uprising" is a fake band! I selected the name randomly from the "Fake A is for ABBA" thread. And then I created the back story, the members of the band, and I tried to play like they would. It's a fun experiment!

I'll be around in March listening to more of your songs!

  • @kahlo2013  Feb 2022

Ha! Excellent! Love it! Great music and wildly cool vocals! Thank you!

  • @wolfkier Feb 2022

    ding tick tick tick ....
    LOL...

  • @wolfkier Feb 2022

ever have a departing ex who superglued your wipers to your windscreen...?

Maybe I acted impulsively on the way out the door, forgive me? LOL.

  • @ferry0123 Feb 2022

You'll like what you did :P

  • @wolfkier Feb 2022

Well, I'm glad. That explains it.

I thought you hated me forever and never wanted to see or hear from me again, ever, no matter how hard I begged and screamed and cried and texted and stomped my feet (and stuff).
You've put my paranoid delusional jealous physchotic clinging possessive passive agressive ass to rest now.
    Thank you. <3

  • @kahlo2013  Feb 2022

    Awesome!

  • @ferry0123 Feb 2022

I took the liberty to already post and still await your title suggestion :)

  • @franniezest  Feb 2022

    Thanks for your comment :)

  • @intoyourlight  Feb 2022

Haha these people…missing all the good stuff :D also interesting what you said about 50/90. I’ll see if I participate. I’ll definitely continue writing. Now that the pressure is gone, I’m curious how my approach to writing songs changed. I’m looking forward to not having to finish a song immediately :D

  • @katestantonsings  Feb 2022

Fawm needs an ocarina slide song!

  • @bachelorb  Feb 2022

Woody Guthrie was a tone snob ??? Lol....

  • @bachelorb  Feb 2022

Thanks for the comment.... About that rabbit hole.....

I have been trying to stay analog every FAWM with pedals etc and the 4 track tape player. This year, I was in the box because of the RV. Even with just GarageBand it's easy to use automation and short repeated loops etc.
I'm trying to find a way to get back to the good ol days though... I'm looking at my 4-track, an EH Canyon pedal and a looper to use for FAWM on the road next year.
Also, I hardly picked up the guitar this year. I need to do that more.
The synth experiments were fun. I'll probably bring those next year too to mess with.
I have successfully remained ignorant of midi so far in my life :D

  • @andrea  Feb 2022

Thank you so much for your very kind and thoughtful comments on In a Perfect Family. I appreciate them very much.

  • @candle  Feb 2022

Well, there's worse education systems in the world :D

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @candle  Feb 2022

Just listening back to Limitless again. Gods, that's a trip. You really did a masterful job with my jumble of lyrics as a starting point.

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @candle  Feb 2022

Thank you! I want to polish that one up a bit, probably post-FAWM. The song came together well, now I just need a better recording. And yeah, I know that's an odd statement coming from me LOL.

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @intoyourlight  Feb 2022

Yes the collab kept my motivation high the last few days and was really fun, and now I’m determined to reach the holy 14 :D
I’ll probably spend the whole next week listening when everything is done, then I’ll come back to the multitude of your songs as well :)

  • @intoyourlight  Feb 2022

Thank you! Yes I’m yearning too. Hopefully not long til springtime!

  • @dragondreams  Feb 2022

    Sorry... I've been lazy. :-D

  • @miga  Feb 2022

thanks for dropping in and listening to armor! Turns out it was a flaw in the track volume level. oops. But I'm not correcting it lol. Glad you liked the guitar amp I picked. And I appreciated the book recommendation. I remember you from last year.

  • @katestantonsings  Feb 2022

    Country life!!

  • @katestantonsings  Feb 2022

The second to youngest boy frequently pees in the bushes. I like to rib his mom about it :) How'd you know?! lol

  • @katestantonsings  Feb 2022

I frequently babysit four little boys in my neighborhood. Wonder what their mom would say to me if I allowed them to piss in the flowerbed? Hippie style!

  • @katestantonsings  Feb 2022

    Ahhh shat!! Lol

  • @katestantonsings  Feb 2022

That’s exactly why I bought one! They eat my hostas each spring.

  • @katestantonsings  Feb 2022

I'm going to catch up on ALL of your music during March listening month for me. :) Some of your titles are hilarious. Btw, I got my salt lick up for the deer in the suburbs (you prob don't remember that odd convo from 50/90). Happy homestretch, Cody! I'll send my 15 sec to you once I am done.

  • @candle  Feb 2022

LOL, yeah it was probably a back alley with a penknife for sure ;->

You're at 24! Wow, I'm so far behind, even in my listening LOL. Well, I guess I know what I'm doing for the next little bit.

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @ballyhoot  Feb 2022

Hi, yeah, no worries about your edits to my corpse. I was a little disappointed in myself I couldn’t get more creative but I was just using my phone for everything and just stymied. So what you did to the track made it far more interesting. Thanks again!

  • @mrblitz000 Feb 2022

thanks for all of your listens/comments this year. rock on!

  • @wolfkier Feb 2022

ok, great... I put you in delta after me and 2nd last to ferry.

  • @wolfkier Feb 2022

How many GIMME15s you wanna do?
Wanna stitch at least 1 of them. Let me know so I can populate lists and we can get a bunch going before month's end.

  • @katestantonsings  Feb 2022

    I want a watermelon deer!

  • @vainhirvain  Feb 2022

Thanks for commenting on my political Dollars & Rubles text. It's a subject that's also tiring and difficult to talk about, so that's where songwriting comes in, as an outlet of some sort. I have now managed to make the song around the lyrics. So if you're looking for some depressing or heavy feelings, take a listen ;) I wish I could have written a song that had a positive and hopeful vibe, but no, not this time.

  • @intoyourlight  Feb 2022

Haha yes that’s why I need a e-drum kit :D besides I really want to play drums, this klicking in my daw is not so satisfying

  • @quork  Feb 2022

I have a looper on my multi effects pedal, but I haven’t experimented with it. You inspire me to press that button and cut loose. I think you and @amalea should collab. Your individual brands of freakiness could reach great synergistic heights.

  • @quork  Feb 2022

Wires shmires. Obviously you’re some kind of twisted genius.

  • @intoyourlight  Feb 2022

Thank you so much for your comment :) yes! Definitely could work with some groovy drums and base. I started programming drums, but I wanted to finish the song today and my programming skills were not beneficial for that goal :D

  • @candle  Feb 2022

LOL, yeah 11 songs in three weeks is pretty good. Sort of off my song-a-day pace that I've been enjoying the last few years. But hey, gotta follow the Muse & if she just ain't interested, there's not much you can do but keep trying to entice her with new ideas. At some point, she'll like something she sees & then run with it.

It just sucks being an artist when she's in a mood like this ;->

    Thanks for the encouragement!

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @candle  Feb 2022

I've been on a Museless hiatus for about a week now with very little drive to FAWM, as such you've far exceded my ability to post songs this year. Congrats on your win, my friend. I'm hoping to make some time shortly to catch up on your tunes. Thanks again for the great comment on Virbations!

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @fuzzy  Feb 2022

If I had a copy of that video I'd probably try to compose a piece especially for it.
    I am enthused.
That kid reminds me of my own daughter; she ended up dying her hair different colours a number of times (bright neon red was her and my favourite). I said "Do what you want; it's only hair!", so she did. She wore whatever she wanted, as well. Living in an extremely small town, though she took a lot of grief from her classmates cos she was "too different". I told her it builds character, and it has!

  • @fuzzy  Feb 2022

    I LOVE THAT WATERMELON PICTURE

  • @kcc  Feb 2022

Hi @dzdandcunfsd ! Thanks for having a listen to Into the Well I really appreciate you taking the time to comment! I'm off to a slow start but hope to post a few more.

  • @stephenwordsmith  Feb 2022

I like the idea of writing in the genre of peasant revival.

    Serf-rock, if you will.

    I'll see myself out.

  • @wrenarcher  Feb 2022

    Hey Cody.
Thanks for taking the time to listen to "Planet and Moon"

I really appreciate the kind words and particularly your compliment on the recording. I was struggling to get a clean recording for 1) because of skill level and 2) my equipment apparently just joined a union and decided it was time to take a break and not do what it's supposed to do. But things worked out after a while and I really like how it turned out.

So your right about those drums. My cubby is kinda small to hold a full set unless...

it's the size of a small tablet!!! :D
Yeah I have an app that looks like a little drum kit. It's kinda cool. The cymbals move when you hit them and the kick and snare kind of... they like react when you hit them as well. And because I have no clue how to program a drum machine or app, didn't want to take the time to set the midi, I sat there hunched over my little tablet desperately trying to tap the drum rhythm. So the drum track is human-esque.

Thanks again for the kind words and compliment. Really means a lot.

  • @ferry0123 Feb 2022

Hiya Cody, Thanks for the heads up! And the nutty noise, which you brought here and is understood and porcessed now :) Getting my piece sent to
@katestantonsings today! I'm talking about Havana Havana. https://fawm.org/forums/topic/12399/

  • @wylddandelyon Feb 2022

I still have never bought matching new furniture for the living room. I have bought more instruments!

  • @wylddandelyon Feb 2022

A cittern has 5 pairs of strings, so 10 total; this one is tuned GDGDG. It was made by luthier Peter Cox from Canada. (I had just gotten a bonus at work and planned to buy matching livingroom furniture; instead I bought this cittern and a guitar from him, and a three-way guitar stand so I could walk across the living room when they were out of their cases. So I guess you could say I got some living room furniture too!)

I have a bit of synaesthesia too, though I don't get colors from music, I get flavors. Minor sevenths are like dark chocolate. :) I love minor sevenths!
