I’m back after a couple years off FAWM. We now ride around the country in our small motorhome during the winter. This year, I decided to take FAWM on the road with me.
I love motorcycles. This last year I've started videoing the trips. My goals this year??? Write 90 second snippets for music to those videos. Plus explore the genre of ambient music (which is very new to me)
Equipment:
Martin 00X1AE, Jews Harp, Hohner Golden Melody, GarageBand, and a Stylophone Gen X-1
Recording Equipment: Shure SM58, 424 Tape Player, GarageBand

I live in Flint, and I am often in Clio!
Yeah, Paulstretch is my secret weapon for Ambient trax.
I hope you are happy with Audacity; it's all I use!
The person that records first is always the issue with timing! ;)
Being from around these parts you probably know or know of that guy, or have at least heard his work, but I'll be nice LOL.
I've willfully stayed mostly ignorant of MIDI as well. I was offered a midi pickup system for a guitar some years back and I declined it, mostly because the tracking was a bit of an issue, but I'm also not a tone snob... I've seen too many people get sucked into that hole spending outrageous amounts of time tweaking one little sound/etc that when thrown into a mix of any kind it was absolutely all wasted effort. It's only my very close friends I'm able to be honest about that with LOL.
One friend in particular I've known over 25 years now (he tracks a lot of drums/etc for people) stopped sending me things until they're mostly finished after I played him back the same snare and kick sample he had been working on for MONTHS all joined together in the same file, and told him to quit using his eyes to tell the difference and listen and tell me honestly if you notice anything... he said damnit you're right, but I hate you for it... you couldn't just pad my ego and tell me how much better it had gotten? :D
Just updated the mix on Bloodlines after getting the raw tracks. Cleaned up some of the timing issues and had fun doing a top to bottom remix. I am shocked I was able to pull the Hammond off for this. :)
Thx for listening and writing.
Just wanted to say that your setup is very inspiring! My brother’s family restored an old 30' trailer and went cross-country for 4 months last year, and I can certainly see the appeal! Bravo to you for making your unique setup work so well, and congrats on finishing FAWM 3 days early!
I loved the collab!
You mention you tried to make it sound like it was behind a glass pane but it didn't work. I've had success in the past using a low pass filter, since the window should block the high frequencies and let the lower frequencies pass.
You can hear it in this song, where I try to simulate a person entering a room where the music is being played: https://thefishermenandthepriestess.com/track/french-connection
Thanks for commenting on my track! There were actually no keyboards on the song, only midi bass, midi drums, and my classical guitar with an effect on it. I did write the lyrics down before recording the vocals. I definitely can't improv without stuttering either!!
Thank you so much for your kind comments on a world of quiet beauty. You certainly can feel the chilled fresh air.
Thanks for your comment on my palindromic song! Feel free to use any parts you like — note that you might need to get the first line of the second verse to make it palindromic with the last verse!
Thanks for listening! I'm having a ton of fun with the 4-track, although I feel like I'm still learning how to get clean sounds out of it.
No, he used a nice midi patch for the Hammond. :)
Thanks for the comment, always up for a collab if you want to add anything to the hats track
Thanks for listening! The Orba is fun, but also very limited if you're using the onboard sounds. Make sure to check out some demos before you plunk down the cash for one!
Thanks again for your nice and uplifting comments. Has helped give some motivation to keep plugging away.
Thanks for your comment, I think most of my songs this year are fragments, partly due to trying to get back to more experimental sounds and partly due to time and energy...I might have to consider a remix project down the road with some of them. Love the rv by the way, great way to live.
Thanks again for your kind comment :)
Thanks for your kind comments on "Beyond the Gate"!
I just put up a better mix....too much noise in the first one
It’s up
Oh it’s really nice in here. I love not having to worry about making too much noise or having everything in different temporary places. One place….thank goodness. How’s the RV life?!?! That’s so awesome, but I told you that already…. Still sticking with me
Hey watch out for the 4 track tape 2…..it’s coming soon. Mixing now
I've got an ocarina staring at me right now that I commited to doing at least one song with earlier this month. I don't know if its gonna happen, those things are hard LOL. While I have technically used it already it was mic'd and ran through so many pedals I don't even know where its at in that particular song anymore...
jew harps are amazing! for me to listen to, another one I've decided to never even attempt after a first failure LOL.
Hah! Its something I long ago gave up trying to do well. I found out he will always sing along while playing one a few years ago. I had headphones on and was trying to record a part and thought wow I got good at this that sounded great. He had stuck his snout in the kitty door and was howling at me....in perfect pitch. Has gotten to where he gets excited when he even sees one and will and will start whining until I very poorly play it.
I was 'last year' years old when I found out about felt picks! Changed the game... I just cannot finger pick other than picking all my fingers together at once. No patterns. Now granted, I am very limited what I am able to pick accurately with a pick, but at least the felt pick SOUNDS kinda like I am using my fingers. And they are cheap! I like the softer ones. The harder felt sounded too close to a regular pick. But buy some of both. :)
Thanks so much for your beautiful comment! I guess many of us had and miss a "Mamby Pamby"... :-) For my little boy, it is a stuffed animal that remotedly looks like a racoon...
Thank you so much for your very encouraging comment :)
Problem solved. try again! Thank you for catching the fact that I forgot to hit the "upload" button before posting the song *facepalm* and then left the house to run errands and pick up Pizza Hut for supper!
I know what happened and I will fix it soon. Away from computer for next 20 min or so. Very sorry my friend! Mea maxima culpa.
Thanks. In my post-accident haze last night I was uploading songs into the wrong folder :( It's fixed now!!!
Thank you for commenting on "Visible and Invisible". I'm glad to hear that if my project is any help for you. And yea, composition itself is a conversation, so I figured lyrics should be too
Howdy there! I can take pretty much any video format and conform it to what we need. Thanks for asking! Feel free to post on my soundboard or email me as questions arise, too. Rock on!
Brad, this is LMR, sorry I've been neck deep in other challenges. I will definitely participate. Never done it before so may need a little advice on how to do it. Is video from my computer or phone acceptable? That's all I've got.
That break, my friend, is called “I am making this up as I go”, lol
Thank you for your comment on "Playful Still" :)
Is 2 the one you can’t do? I can put you on 3 if you want
I moved you over to Tape 20, since the electronic one has some specific needs - the first three are all using track 4 to line up our electronic stuff.
Hey! Good to see you here again! Missed you the last year or two. I have not had a spare second to do anything except work on my songs but I'm going to be listening to stuff soon
The rumours are sadly true. I've been working on this since 2019 and I will be SO GLAD to be done.
Thanks for the kind words on "I Have Two Kidneys", it's always interesting to find out how many people in my circle have experience with transplants.
I would like to thank you so much for your that kind and generous words...
You can record onto any track that is open. If your 2 doesn't work, then work it out with the others. Shouldn't be a problem. p.s. - Michigan basketball isn't worth missing FAWM for (or anything else, haha) ;)
Apparently I have missed said B&M. What's the issue?
looking forward to your music too!!
I just asked in the forum if you have a concept theme for this FAWM, but it looks like your theme may be short songs reflecting your motorcycle excursions? Sound cool!
Its for sure nicer there in the winter-time! Its been an odd winter here so far it keeps cycling to the single digits or teens back to the 60s and 70s then do it all again next week. I play "outside" well my barn is insulated and I've got some propane heat, but its cold on those cold days when I've been given no chance to get used to it.
I like the idea of adding music to some bike videos! I don't ride much anymore, but its something I've never lost the love for. Though most of my previous riding was off-road I might get into a nice cushy old man bike one of these days! An uncle left one of his cruisers here last summer while they were moving. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it.
*waves* always happy to see a fellow Okie here! I've got some family in that part of the state, Ketchum, Pryor, etc. I'm outside of Woodward now, near Chester(if it can still be counted as a town) where even by this states standards there is nothing.
Happy fawm!
Welcome back my friend!! :) Yay FAWM!
