2022 Update: I was diagnosed with vocal chord paralysis. So my instrument has changed and I am still waiting on voice therapy. I'm OK and I still can sing in my upper register some of the time, but I am still learning how this new reality manifests in my songwriting. Given so many unknowns I just couldn't bring myself to step to the mic this year. It was kind of a shock, and I spent much of February adjusting to this and other family issues. But I am sad I couldn't participate and have missed too many of your wonderful creations. Hopefully next year!

WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN My 7th!

So this year work is sensible but I’ve a new challenge: my voice. I’ve been struggling with vocal control all year but a VC spasm sent me to the ER in October. Waiting on an ENT consult. So really not sure what I am capable of this year, but I will do my best to get a few on the board. Still, most of what I love about FAWM is listening and I don’t need my voice for that! Have a great one!

———

I've always favored the monophonic. I studied classical flute semi-seriously, so I read music. But I play a number of other instruments mostly by ear, including my voice - which is my main instrument right now. The past six years I have started getting into digital music that I write and produce on my MacBook using Logic.

I have never taken any serious voice lessons (aside from a few random lessons here and there). I honestly learned to sing by listening to Ella Fitzgerald CDs. Back in the late 90s I would buy a CD put it in the player, and keep it on until I knew each song. Then I would go and buy another one.

My vocal style is also steeped in my heritage - I am from Newfoundland where there is a lot of Irish/English folksong influence. That celtic-sounding, falsetto flip faux-pas that I do a lot comes from that, and I also have a hard time not using it because I feel like I came by it honestly. :P

But my main musical influences have mostly been 80s female artists and the 80s New Wave sound. I also loved early disco (Ross), The Stones, hair bands like Def Leppard, and was a huge Police fan - (first record I ever bought!)

Getting into digital music means that I can easily find the sounds of my youth and participate in sonic time travel and be a singer/songwriter in a style that has etched itself in my brain. I don't feel that I recreate 80s music. I just make music that sounds like music I once danced to. But the show tune thing? That's all Ella. :)

I performed vocals live for five years as part of a duo cover band (vox piano). I quit that two years ago when my voice started becoming unpredictable. So I stick to my studio now and I love it. Still trying to sort out what's up with the voice box, but it's slowly getting better.

My first original song was written in 2015 with my pal back in England. That's the year we started FAWM. :) He's been captured by real life, so I've been here on my own for four years and It's been such an amazing exploration. There's nothing like singing my own lyric.

Thank you! I don't have microphones so I have no idea how to record my guitar. If my piezo pickup sounds too bad, I may compose on guitar and write down as MIDI... Let's see how far I come!
