2022; aka FAWM #12!
What's new since last year?
Me and @judypie bought a house together, so a new environment for songwriting and recording. Our offices/studios are now next door rooms so we'll see how the logistics work in that regard...
I have joined a new band (very early days) as a guitarist and as such have purchased some new pedals and an amp. I'm hoping to record some mic'd up amp noize but it might be too noisy in the house, we'll see.
I've done a fair bit of recording over the year, mostly covers but it's kept me warmed up ready for February.
I'm still hosting a weekly radio show which I love doing, I've interviewed some amazing and talented people; you can listen to past episodes over here: https://www.mixcloud.com/deepcutssheffield/
11 previous FAWM albums here: adfollett.bandcamp.com
My wondrous partner @judypie is FAWMing again (hopefully anyway, feel free to shame her into it), so go see her please.
Thanks in advance for the comments, I try and comment back to everyone that comes to say hey and comments on a song, even if it's a little belated. Good luck everyone!
I love collaborating but can't make any promises or guarantees, and I do already have people in mind.. but you never know.
1st March: 14 done! 12 out of 12 FAWM wins! Huge thank you to @bigmood, @balancelost, @tangle, @susyblue, and @hanley for the collabs, each one was an absolute dream! Thanks to everyone who has left a comment, honoured and bemused that you'd spent your time listening to my stuff. I will be around to catch up on my commenting!

One of these days...that's cool that you're in a band though. Keep us posted!!!
Right back at ya on the commenting. I've really enjoyed your stuff this year. Definitely been an up and down one for me this time around though.
You've probably forgotten but you asked how I made that distant orchestra sound on my Ukraine song. It's just the BBC Orchestra vst (the free one, obviously because I'm a cheapskate!). Then I just put...checks settings...a metric fuckton of reverb on it.
What's your new band's name?
Ha yeah good point! Hopefully next year will be an actual thing... if it is I will be here, synthesiser at the ready.
Thanks Ad! It was fun to add a harmony to @cleanshoes 's song.
Absolutely blown away again by your output this FAWM. Thanks so much, really inspiring. Quality is insane! I’m going for another deep listen this week. I’d say let’s try a collab next year but I don’t think you need me and I have no idea what I’d bring to the party! :-)
@mikedebenham - took me all year! But it's here! On this basis I have added it as a collab without Adam's say so for this year, but I'm sorry if that's too much of a liberty. I had tried to get him/someone to claim it - but it perhaps needs vocals if someone wanted to extract the wav from chromelabs. Or start again! The words are just suggested by the melody so far (or vice versa). Anyone else can have another go if they like, I'm not precious! I apologise for my efforts.
Any update on the Helen Mirren situation?
>:-( UR MOM sounds like Carly Rae Jepsen
Adam! My god your voice & lyrics on our 4-track Tape #6 are beyond amazing! Sterling work my friend.
Julie and I were first
Thank you so much for your comment, I’m happy you liked the song :) yes that’s a good advice, I‘m actually in a colab right now and it really motivates you again :D
Cheers Ad for you official review of 'Lost in the Woods' - honoured to be mentioned in the same breath as Tomorrow's Modern Boxes in any context! Yeah, it's not a massive hooky song, but quite fun to listen to on a late-night headphone session....
OOPS! Thanks for the heads up <3
Ahh yess bless u for that Tierra whack reference!! She's the best. Really appreciated your comment :)
Great minds - I recorded a version of those bits exactly like you suggested first but I couldn't work out how to stop it interfering with the next line so I redid it the way it is now!
Thanks man! This does feel kind of unnervingly straightforward for me and I wanted to add piano and an ice crunching effect and and and but just had to let it gooooo. Thanks for listening. :)
I've basically got 4 more songs to wrap up this story/D&D session, so I need to make sure everything progresses to a certain point. No worries if you can't listen or follow along, but I appreciate what you've said so far!
I did consider throwing the guitar solo through the pitch shifter! But then realised I was quite lazy.
Oh and I’ll listen to your songs as song as I have some time to do so!
Thank you so much for your comment on „change of weather“ and the other songs as well! Very happy that you enjoyed them :)
I don’t know either what the scale is, I play by ear most of the time, but yes it is a bit eerie :)
Oh hello there....I finally got here for some listening! all muzak this year, eh? hmmm.. I doubt that highly.
Okay, Julia holter, I’ve heard a few of these— love it!
Thanks so much!! Julia Holter, I’ll have to look it up. Thanks
I am glad to hear that cos that’s exactly the woman I was trying to channel :D
Thanks! For the comment and the egg slicer pun. I love puns, puns are simply awesome! :)
Oh and I loved what you said about the guy walking across Wales in a straight line. Such a great image to connect to my song.
Thanks for your lovely comment on my song. Hope you're having a good fawm!
Are you a W0rd1e fan as well? Letters disguised so as to not give a spoiler
Thanks for your comment on The Duel
Hey man, thanks for putting your ear to my music - really appreciate all the wise words and getting a chance to experience the listening experience through someone else. Can sometimes be a bit disorientating listening to the same song a hundred times - and trying to maintain any confidence that something isn't just worthy of this world simply because it's been on repeat for the last four hours!
And spotted I'm now on your watchlist. No pressure there then ;)
hey, I'd love to collab with you! down for acoustic or electronic, whatever sounds good to you. Could be nice to do a sweet lil acoustic tune?
Thanks for the kind words on Your Eyes! Love all the stuff you are putting on FAWM this year. Keeping us all inspired :)
Hey Ad - thanks for the kind words about my song! It's really not the kind of song I'd normally - but I suppose that's what FAWM's about eh?
Yeah... I'd noticed that the lower register stuff disappears. In another year I'd have messed about until the wee hours with some volume automation (or beefed it up with an extra pass or two) but it's just finding the time this year! Might fix it post FAWM (but probably won't!).
Haha definitely wasn't accusing you of nicking actual Rumpus tunes! But the style was right there in the first loud bit.
...
Now you'll have to do it again a bunch to sate my appetite :)
Thanks so much for listening!
The secret to that modal ambiguity is.... making it all up as I go along!
I have very little in the way of a foundation in music theory. I just put my fingers on different frets until I get a sound that I like. With those levels of gain, three note chords usually do the trick, though throwing in an octave above or below does wonders to thicken things up.
Guitar solos always take me ages to figure out becuase my default is the good ol' minor pentatonic, and then I find that there will be a note that goes, "Oi! NO!" at me and I have to spend ages noodling to find out why... ;)
Oh man, I appreciate my song's comparison to Explosions In The Sky, so thank you for the comment!
Just outing yourself as a one-time listener like it's NOTHING? Brave. Yes the lead lines are the synth, but put through the same fuzz pedal!
Thanks for your comment on Baby I Got You.
Thanks for the kind words. I do like listener so I’ll take that as a compliment for sure!
I would love to hear a long list radio transmission come in… that’s why I am hoping people (like you) do something with these loops and add/make stuff!
Thanks for the thoughtful listen to Opening Closing Remarks. I knew it! I was influenced by that space thread as well. At various times I had a muted guitar, an additional bass line, and even brass in the final section. I stripped all that away and I think the song is better for it.” Agree with vocal effect taking up the sonic field … especially after hearing it on different speakers now. It was over the line anyway but I threw a stereo spread on late in the mixing when my ears were already beat and it just exacerbated it.
Hey thanks for your comment! I have been having a lot of issues getting my tracks to a normal volume, I’ll try your audacity tip!
It's "Please don't make me choose between all of these canoes". If you can't even get the lyrics to my most famous song right how will you ever memorise my b-sides
Karl mentioned Verve… yet another band I sound like that I have never heard. Blur was another. I missed a lot of 90’s bands when our kids were little, lol. I was also in a big time alt-folk phase back then. I loved a few but missed a bunch.
It’s always guitar time.
BAM
So, two people mention Sigus Ros… I guess that means Is better go listen to them, lol. I have heard of them but have never heard them. And yes, the JHS 3 Fuzz was on the baritone guitar and had the solos in the first and last part. The Jazzmaster played the middle solo sans fuzz (just the amp’s crunch)
Thanks for your comment on Accumulation Game.
LOL I was just uploading a better file! It should work now!
AF! I just realised that every single letter of your name is a musical note. Except the M, the O, the L, the other L, the T, and the other T. Weird, eh?
I'M ASSUMING the pizza was a "bit cardboardy" but I couldn't find a way to organically fit that into the lyric.
there might be a chance that I'm around this year. who is to say, really?
Well hello there squire! Nice to be on board now, just to get something written!
FFFFAAAAAWWWWM
Hey, Thanks! Looking forward to hearing your stuff!
Well if it isn’t DJ Chef Deep Cutz (aka DC/DC).
Looking forward to your aural culinary delights, satisfying our cravings for Post-Neo-Metal-Folk, Future-Wave-Gregorian-Cha-Cha-Chants and Soft-Spoken-Nu-Noise-Jazz-EDM.
Oh yeah
Hiiiii! Happy FAWMing!
Hey, nerd! Nice to see you, too.
Go to the thrift store and grab some old commercial tapes, tape up the hole on top and record over them. :)
He must be / must have been quite well known in Manchester I suppose. I met him in Morocco, of all places, but made it up to one of the CP all-dayers back in the glory days of the mid/late 00's some time.
Yeah, I have two 424mkII (bought long before things got stupid expensive). One is going to be my dedicated loop recorder - I taped some foil over the erase head.
Do a couple practice rounds with it pre-FAWM, though. Remember to have the levels nice and hot, near the top at all times. :)
p.s. I see we have Matthew B-G as a mutual on instagram, he used to Plan things very Carefully
Well adieu does rhyme with Peru, so in some ways it's better than your actual username. Haha.
I always thought your username was aduforperu / adieu for peru , but just realised I wrong. Adieu!
Oooohhh!!!!! And you have the very best one too! (ahem, in my personal opinion) ;) Congrats - I hope you love it!
adddddiiieeee.... if we can’t collab... give me something to dance to (you’re always so good at that)
Holaaa back at ya dude
*tossin' up the peace sign*
Happy FAWMing - may good times be had to the fullest. I'll be around.
I am perpetual rockededlybon
Have a great FAWM!!
I am looking forward to hearing you again this year! Happy FAWM!
haven't determined how much of a participant I will be this year but I will definitely be listening. Best of luck to you!
Will there be a fight over who is using the office and who is using the studio at any given moment? :D Good to see you both back!
Hello! Happy fawming. I look forward to some truely epic hammer-playing.
I discovered your songs through FAWM last year but it was March, so I don't remember if I even commented. Anyways, I REALLY liked your music. Looking forward to whatever happens in 2022. Happy FAWMing!
Hello friend! Looking forward to the sounds you make this year. Congrats on home ownership!
Hey there, very much looking forward to hearing you this Feb :-) Good luck!
Looking forward to the noise you make! I seem to remember a cameo from a pizza guy last year.... good stuff.
Hiyaaaaaaaa! Happy FAWM, Adam!
Cheers bro! Baby and work is time consuming but I do have a plan! Let’s see!
Obvs you will create masterpieces #itsagiven
Heyyyy! It's happening!!!
thank u for the kind words! so glad you dig :’) I’m gna try my best to be in/stay in this year! excited to see what you got cookin…
I'm not sure if I'll be doing Japan themed flashbacks for my music this year or not yet. I haven't been able to travel there since 2019 now, but I'll find other sources of inspiration for this year's FAWM, for sure.
the influences list hasn't even been updated yet, it's about to get even longer
Oh hi!!!
Congratulations on all your (positive) changes! Happy FAWM and can't wait to check out your stuff m8.
Are you going to do a Metal song for some of that amped noize? That would be insane. If so please don't do Nu-Metal. Stick with grindcore or speed.
Can't wait to hear what you create this year and welcome back!
Hello! Looking forward to your cool jams and hopefully we can manage a collab again (no pressure of course!).
Hey woah we're doing housecalls already? I can't take almost two weeks of anticipation!!
Hey hey, thank you for the welcome and the congrats! Good to see you here, too and congrats to YOU all on the house and the band! Looking forward to hearing what you two come up with in y'all's new space this FAWM.
I thought I had installed an Ad-blocker!
….
Thank you, I’ll be here all week!
Questions that I’ve wondered about you as well… let’s just start with the 4-track.
Hey. Hope the cracked ribs don’t stop you from sweet songmaking. I’m excited to hear your creations, friend!

Hey! Yes, I'm here and ready to make some lovely music!
Greetings good sir!! Always a pleasure to hear from you and I’m looking forward to hearing your music again! Happy FAWM to you! I’ll be listening.
One last thing - I seriously hope your ribs feel better soon. Take care of yourself! <3
