I'm just a mild-mannered librarian, so please no loud noises.

I'm very excited about this - I'm hoping to do more collaborations this FAWM, as I really enjoyed doing them in 50/90 in 2021.

PS as a "reward", if I get to 14 this year, I will post up my love song to Gwyneth Paltrow, a cool jazz attempt, called "Goop", that I wrote in the days before FAWM started. But it will count as I'm finalising the words in February, I have decided...

Thank you for the fantastic feedback on Cloud River. And congratulations on finishing! May the FAWM be with you ALWAYS

  • @cblack Feb 2022

Ha! Glasgow accent for the win!

  • @nadine Feb 2022

Being a rocking night owl ans having neighbours is a bad combination. But this passive agressive whisper singing works well. Yeah not everything is in pitch bit it's FAWM time so I don't care ;-) It's a cool track!

  • @thedutchwidows  Feb 2022

I like that half-arsing the words is an option of last resort for you, when there's no time to do anything but that.

It's literally my go to approach.

  • @thedutchwidows  Feb 2022

Good to hear! You can’t be Johnny Dangler and offer the sweet reward of the Goop song and not deliver! Excitement level currently at 9, nudging 9.25. (For avoidance of doubt, my excitement scale is 0 to 10, so we’re talking pretty excited…)

  • @thedutchwidows  Feb 2022

Hey @brisk - how you doing? Keeping your head above water? I’m really hoping you’re going to pull a couple more out the bag before this all shuts down, cos I really want to hear your ode to Gwyneth…!

  • @cblack Feb 2022

    (Sorry, too many characters...)

Life on Earth is so much better
    when your soul gets wetter,
    R O C K
    Let's rock!

    (Outro solo.)

    Let's rock!
    Let's rock!
    Yeah!
    Fuck yeah!
    Let's fuckin' rock!

  • @cblack Feb 2022

    How does this sound?

    ---

    "Life on Earth (Let's Rock!)"

    Liner:

    cblack says:

I was listening to Motorhead when I wrote these lyrics. I was paired with brisk for a random collab, and they mentioned a rock song. I needed inspiration, so I looked at my challenge list. I found the Oracle challenge ( https://fawm.org/forums/topic/12059/ ), where I'd been given the Earth card (see https://www.colettebaronreid.com/oracle/earth/ ). I instantly made a pun on "rock". Sorry.

But I had the title in mind now. It was about what Earth has to offer a rocker. The first stanza came to me easily, and informed the framework for the rest of the song. I'm actually really pleased with this. It's different to any lyrics I've written before, but I love it. It just came so easily!

Really looking forward to what brisk does with this. :)

    Lyrics:

They say I need a job,
and hit me in the gob,
but there's only one thing I wanna do:
    Let's rock!

    Drinkin', smokin', anything will do.
Give me some fuckin' pills too!
Let's tear this fuckin' place down!
    Let's rock!

    Sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll,
pour it in my fuckin' soul!
    Party party, explore the world,
    let's rock!

    Laughin' in the VIP room,
    listenin' to rock and doom,
no idea what the fuck just happened!
    Let's rock!

    (Breakdown spoken word section.)

"I'll tell ya a little fuckin' story. One night, around eleven, I was smoking a joint, right, and I saw the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen. So I go and talk to her, and she's a fucking professor! Said she was really enjoying the after-party, social observation sort of shit, right?

So I asked her, "You're smart. What do you think is the meaning of life?" And she looked me dead in the eye, and I'll never forget what she said to me. She said,

    (Music comes back in strong.)

    "Let's rock!"

    (Some sort of solo.)

    Whiskey, vodka, gin'll be fine,
just so long as that glass is mine.
Guitar in hand, the lights are low,
    let's rock!

Life on Earth is so much better
    when your soul gets wetter

  • @cblack Feb 2022

Hey! Yeah, I'll get some lyrics over to you soon. Probably rock rather than metal. We'll see. :)

  • @mattwdunn  Feb 2022

I am tempted to do 50/90. Although I’m not sure my wife and kids would deal with the neglect for that long!!

  • @vomvorton  Feb 2022

Ha, yeah - I wonder if that Portal song is secretly one of the most influential tracks of recent times!

  • @vomvorton  Feb 2022

Hey, cheers for the kind words! I've heard a few people do the formant shifting thing but this album (and particularly this track) is what I'm particularly leaning on, I really like the effect of hearing that kind of vocal over a natural-sounding indie-rock kinda song, rather than the super-processed electronic stuff it's more commonly paired with. I think this song's amazing!

  • @n24  Feb 2022

Thanks for the comment! Yeah it’s like a synth saxophone or something, I was getting pretty tired out and just needed something to clarify the chorus chords a little :p

  • @jlampson  Feb 2022

Thanks for your note on "The Box I Was Delivered In". I love that you picked up the New Wave vibe, as I was listening to a Missing Persons song when I came up with this. I also didn't intend to be super critical of the drums, just noticed that they, and other parts of the song, can get addressed and improved after this here fine songwriting month we got here. Rock on!

  • @leka Feb 2022

Thanks for listening and commenting so nicely!

  • @thedutchwidows  Feb 2022

Honesty is to be admired, especially if it's to your own detriment. I think you can generally apply a ±10 day tolerance to the February specification. Well, maybe -10 days, as the site blocks the +10 day bit, but the point (sort of) stands.

Sorry to hear things have gone south a bit, although the south is generally warmer than the north, unless you're right on the south coast, in which case going further south is wetter. (making light of any potentially tricky situations is my default - sorry!).

  • @pianoonthepatio Feb 2022

Thank you for your lovely comment on Strangers with Memories! :)

  • @greengrassgirl  Feb 2022

Your voice has a quality I find appealing for a certain kind of song. Almost a whisper, but with more innuendo. I especially liked Let the World Burn Down and Step Out of Time...I haven't heard that POV before, and it was intriguing. What brought me to your page was your comment on Hit Man. That was such a fun collab! I'm glad you liked it.

  • @coolparadiso  Feb 2022

Only just cottoned on to who you are hypnotist, yeslessness! I am subscribed so get your releases! I played one of yours from 50/90 on my podcast only yesterday, Mr taro was telling me about you when interviewed him as well. Now i must listen to more of yours.

  • @thedutchwidows  Feb 2022

You should read Metaphor As Mistake by Walker Percy in his collection The Message in the Bottle. It's about how unintended errors often end up being better or more suitable than the 'correct' version. Although content warning - the language is quite of its time in places (1958), particularly around race.

I went to great lengths to track down a copy in pre-internet times (about 1991), as I don't think it was in print at the time; I got a copy from the US at great expense for a poor student. It was a piece of delicious irony that I accidentally sold it at a car boot sale around 2002 - it was in the wrong box so ended up for sale, and by the time the woman had picked it up and offered me the (ridiculously low) asking price, I was too embarrassed to admit my error and I sold it to her. I had to buy another copy (it was back in print by then).

  • @thedutchwidows  Feb 2022

Sorry - my comment wasn't a veiled suggestion to go back to it. I took it to be choice, and it totally works!

  • @nahlej381  Feb 2022

Thanks so much for your kind words! Deft or daft, hard to tell which and ya lil reference to the bard where I can get em in lol thanks again look forward to checking your tunes out

  • @n24  Feb 2022

It’s a pleasure! I’m looking forward to listening to more of your stuff! And that’s really kind feedback, I definitely shoot for honesty :) this is my first FAWM but it has quickly and without a doubt become my favourite corner of the internet hands down!

  • @lyricslinger  Feb 2022

    Hi,
Glad you like the lyrics. Happy for you to play around with the genre and see what sounds best. :)

  • @radioovermoscow Feb 2022

It's very good for having usable rock/punk tones right out of the box. Not as versatile as some of the other amp simulations mind you.

  • @lyricslinger  Feb 2022

    Hi,
I've come up with a lyric for our random collab song and also have done a very rough vocal demo to give an idea of the melody that I had in mind. What's the best way of getting them to you? Do you want me to email them to you or just post here with you tagged as collaborator?

  • @radioovermoscow Feb 2022

Hi! The guitar tone on that song is all STL Tonehub. One guitar is panned in the middle, the other is double-tracked and hard panned with this excellent fuzz VST emulation on it https://plugins4free.com/plugin/3515/ - it's a blend of the DI fuzz and the amp simulation sound.

Those together, with a grunty and lightly distorted bass, make that sound.

  • @sorby69  Feb 2022

Hi there! Thanks for listening to and commenting on my "Who's shaking the jar?" song! I laughed out loud at "deep-fried distortion". I will be sure to check out Young Knives. Cheers!

  • @thedutchwidows  Feb 2022

No problem - I’m enjoying the listens. I’d say you’re on it musically this year, though it sounds like there’s a lot going outside of music. In the actual real world. Hope everything’s ok.

  • @lyricslinger  Feb 2022

    Hi,
Great to hear that we've been paired up in the random collab challenge. I'll have a go at writing some lyrics and will send them across to you. Let me know if there's a particular theme that you'd like to write about?

  • @mctown Feb 2022

Well.... I guess we need to run another one if you are up for it. I've been a little off the mark. David

  • @erucaesounds  Feb 2022

And thanks for your thoughts on Dust In My Eyes!

  • @richaaaay  Feb 2022

I'd be honored. Shoot me an email. [email protected]

  • @andrea  Feb 2022

Thanks for your wonderful comments on Shangri-La. I was thinking about writing 'dragon' lyrics and 'Puff the Magic Dragon' kept creeping into my mind. I finally gave in and listened to it -lol. Now I have to wonder if it was on mind partly from Shangri-La. Interesting :)

  • @davidtaro  Feb 2022

Bass definitely sounds better. Still maybe a touch loud for my ears, but I think some of the pokiness has gone. I mean who really knows, we’re all making this up as we go along :)

  • @richaaaay  Feb 2022

Hey…thanks for the listens and comments. Glad you picked up on my groans in foot of snow. I was channeling my inner Hypnotist at that moment in time.

Your music just resonates with me. I get excited when I see you’ve posted something. It’s always so uniquely you. Love it…

  • @erucaesounds  Feb 2022

Thanks for your kind comments on Mr. Spaceman, much appreciated!

  • @jlampson  Feb 2022

Howdy there! Thanks for commenting on my song. The drums I used were the Tama Starclassic kit from the Fairfax collection of Addictive Drums.

  • @caitlin Feb 2022

Awww now I have Hey Mickey stuck in my head, ha! Trendy Girl songspiration!

  • @caitlin Feb 2022

Thanks for swinging by and commenting on 15,022 Days, it means a lot! I’m trying to incorporate more of those non-verbal hooks I love so much in cover songs that I perform. I’m like “wait, why don’t I write some of those into my own music? Duh!”

  • @daveyboy103  Feb 2022

Definitely works as an instrumental which is probably why no words came to me for It's About Time, apart from the title of course.

    Thanks for the feedback

  • @caitlin Feb 2022

That is a sign of excellent songwriting if your listener can’t tell if it’s a prayer, or a threat, or a promise, or all of them. Sounds like NOFX nailed that. Whatever Didi Wants is new family favorite in our house for sure!

I really enjoyed the random structure of (You’re Not) Loretta. I wouldn’t change it. And I can totally see the nod to Pen Cap Chew!

  • @davidtaro  Feb 2022

Shall we do our (what I am now making) ritual lyric swap? I must warn you, I haven’t actually got any lyrics at present, so can’t guarantee they’ll come any time soon, but feels like a fun way to get some collabs out there.

  • @thedutchwidows  Feb 2022

Cheers for the nice comment - to answer the question about the percussion, no, that came last. It sounded more natural without it, but I like the angularity and awkwardness it gave, so just forced it to fit!

  • @mctown Feb 2022

Now Danny calls his girl sugar...and Billy calls his honey babe.. but the woman I got well, all I can say...

she's a Cherry Pie Smoothie... made for Saturday night... cool and sweet... makes my heart go....beat, beat, beat... kisses oh.. let me tell you they are kisses..oooooo eeeeee...she's a Cherry Pie Smoothie...
if I called her that she'd get all testy.. and tell me where I could go... but she's sweet and smooth so I know...

    chorus..

guess it's innuendo.. but hey, I love her so.. from her body right down to her very soul... so...I'm bragging...but let's keep it on the downlow...
    she's a Cherry Pie Smoothie...etc..

    for Brisk

  • @mctown Feb 2022

oooopppppps.....forgot your email... [email protected] .. message me there and I'll send you one...David

  • @thedutchwidows  Jan 2022

Hey @brisk - hope you're well. Looking forward to your FAWM22 output!

  • @davidtaro  Jan 2022

I am rather jealous of your Wooden Fish Guiro. (Great song title there btw). Looking forward to what you come up with, and yes please I'd love to collab on something. I think you slightly overestimate the demand on my services!
